Allen Pearson, who headed a forecast center for years, tells about a lady who was not pleased with the warning system. "She called me up to protest that the tornado watch  had  kept  her  in  her basement for five hours, and nothing happened," says Allen Pearson. "I tried to explain that we did not want to alarm her; we just wanted her to be aware.  Unfortunately,  the  same  thing  happened again five months later. She was really angry that time; we had given a warning, but there was no tornado. She would no longer believe us."

the same thing happened again

repeated mistakes

she would no longer believe us

a loss of trust

By the time I started middle school, I realized that most of my fellow students had the idea that we Asian students are all smart. It's true that some are. But what about those of us who aren't? Having to act like a brain can be a pain. My classmates come to me for answers, but I sometimes can't help them. Then they look at me strangely. If I were a genius, I would not mind being treated like one. But since I am not, I do

① smart    ----    pain

② smart    ----    promise

③ kind     ----    promise

④ kind     ----    pain

⑤ diligent  ----    pleasure

One winter night I found myself lost in the fog and in a part of the city I didn't know. Then, I met a man and asked him to direct me. He said okay and we walked together, with his hand on my elbow. When we arrived at the address I had given, I said goodbye, thanking him. As I turned to shake his hand, I realized he could not see my hand, and indeed the way we had come. The stranger who had led me so surely through the fog was blind.

To one who must live in a world of    (A)  , the way ahead is as     (B)     in the thickest fog as in the brightest sunshine.

      (A)                 (B)                         (A)               (B)

   ① darkness ---    dangerous                 ② darkness  ---    clear

   ③ business ---    clear                      ④ business ---    promising

   ⑤ information  --- dangerous

When I learned how to drive, my father took me around our neighborhood to let me get a feel for the huge car we owned. The quiet, narrow streets of the neighborhood witnessed the blunders of yet another new driver : too-wide (or too-narrow) turns, sudden stops, damage to the low-hanging trees by the radio antenna, and driving on the wrong side of the street to avoid the parked cars on the right side. Through it all, my father gave words of advice and support with patience.

My father    (A)  me all the time when I made        (B)     in learning how to drive.

      (A)         (B)                        (A)              (B)

① scolded --- mistakes               ② criticized    ---  progress

③ warned --- turns                   ④ encouraged ---  mistakes

⑤ praised --- progress
