-5공식의 소개

어떻게 하면 남보다 빨리 독해풀고 남보다 더 정확히 문제를 파악할수 있을까? 영어를 공부하는 수험생이라면 누구나가 겪는 문제이다 우리는 이점에 대하여 이제 고민할 필요는 없다 이 책에서 제시하는 5공식과 미시적 접근을 익히면 된다.

미시적 접근에 대하여는 독해 파트에서 자세히 소개하고 있으니 목차순대로 공부하면 된다. 여기에서는 독해의 거시적 틀을 빨리 간파하는 5공식에 대하여 소개를 한다.

 

(1)예측어

문단의 처음에서 제시되는 말은 일정한 뒷 부분의 흐름에 방향성을 설정하게 된다.

(2)부정역접

역접의 요소는 앞에서 제시한 도입문을 무시하고 자신의 진정한 생각을 밝히는 부분이고 역접 부정역시 단순한 긍정이 아닌 판단하는 대상에 대한 자신의 negative한 생각을 밝힘으로서 작가의 가치판단을 드러내는 것이니 당연히 주제의식이 담기게 된다.

 

(3)양보 도치 비교 구문

양보 도치 비교 구문은 수사기술 중에서 자신의 생각을 드러내는 강조구문들이다 그러니 이 구문들은 작가의 가치판단을 현저히 드러낸다.

 

(4)의문의 제기 및 해결

주로 자신의 의견 개진을 위한 논설문보다는 설명문독해에서 필자의 주장은 의문을 제기하고 그에 대하여 답을 주는 방식으로 전개가 많이 된다. 그래서 본문 중 나타나는 1)의문사는 무조건 catch 해야 하고,

2)또한 마찬가지로 자신이 역접을 둬서 소개를 하는 그러나 독자에게는 생소 내지는 의문을 가질만한 부분은 작가는 어차피 부연을 해서 소개하기 마련인바 그에 해당하는 동격(또는 그 세련된 모습인 관계사의 계속적 용법)이 나오면 무조건 주제의식이 드러난 것이다.

3)마지막으로 작가가 이상적 형용사 즉 일상적상태와 다른 형용사를 쓰는 경우 대표적인 예로 진주어 가주어 구문에서 it is importtant, marvelous 와 같은 식으로 이상적 형용사를 쓰는 경우에는 반드시 주제문이 들어있다.

 

(5)사람수치의 활용

독해의 본문 중에 구체적인 사람의 이름이 특히 고유명사의 형태로 제시가 되면 그것은 권위자의 이름을 들어서 작가 자신의 주장을 보강하기 위한 경우라고 보면 된다. 그리고 숫자와 관련된 표현이 나온다면 글의 전개와 관련해서 명확한 형식적 요소를 제시하고 있다고 보면 된다.

 

이상의 5공식은 모든 시험용 독해에 적용이 된다. 이제 이러한 5공식과 유형별 접근을 통해서 독해만점을 제시한다.

역접 부정 요소만 체크해도 독해는 바로 끝난 것이다.

역접 부정 요소 세가지 특히 중간에 핵으로 작용하는 on the other hand 만 체크하면 주제 파악은 끝이 난 것이다 그렇다면 첫문장의 so 는 성공하게 해준다는 얘기일 테니 but 의 내용은 앞에 남이 말하는 말이 성공을 가져다 준다는 내용일것이다

즉 첫 never 는 부정적 마음을 나타내는 요소로서 둘째 on the other hand 는 반면의 의미를 가지는 일종의 역접요소로서 그리고 마지막 but 은 다시금 주제 의식을 드러내는 요소로 보여진다.

그렇다면 전체적인 역접요소로 작용하는 즉 앞에서 자신의 진짜 의도와는 반대되는 생각을 먼저 펼쳐놓고 진정한 주제문을 펼치기 시작하는 on the other hand부터 주제는 시작되는 것이고 “긍정적 사고를 가져라”가 당연히 주제가 될것이다

only 즉 오로지라는 의미를 썼기에 분명히 이것은 글 중에서 결정적 가치 판단의 단어가 된다 그럼 무엇이 “유일하게” 가치있는것이라고 했을까? 그 것만 잘 찾아보면 이 문제는 바로 답이 나온다.

많은(many) 사람들은 생각한다(think)한다고 첫 문장을 시작했다. 첫 문장이 이러하다면 절대로 자기 생각은 이렇지 않을 것이다 왜? 그렇다면 달리 이 독해의 내용에서 할말이 없을것이기 때문이다. 그렇다면..당연히 첫 문장에서 제시한 내용과 다른 방향으로의 전개가 주제문이 될 것이다.

즉 첫 문장에서 고고학은 선사시대문화의 연구가 유일(only)라고 생각한다고 했으나 그것과는 반대 방향 즉 선사시대의 문화 이외의 것들의 연구가 주된 글의 주제가 될 것이다. 그래서 바로 but 즉 역접 요소를 바로 제시하고 거기다 답을 더 분명하게 제시하기 위해서 "historical archaeology." 라고 따옴표까지 제시를 하였다. 그러니 여기서 주된 생각은 역사적 고고학 즉 문헌에 의한 내용검토를 전제로 하는 고고학이다.

most 비교 왜 썼을까? 무엇인가 가장...하다는 작가의 생각의 표현이다 그렇다면 분명히 그곳에는 작가의 주제의식이 있다 그리고 중간에 여러 가지 서술을 하다가 whereas 와 같은 것이 있다면 반드시 거기에는 자신의 분명한 얘기꺼리가 있다.

short story 가 most popular 하다고 했다 즉 이러한 논설문이 아닌 가벼운 자신의 생각을 나타내는 글에서는 최상급 표현은 거의 자신의 생각을 드러내는 큰 열쇠가 된다.

그리고 마지막 단락에선 Long introductions. leisurely discourses on philosophy. and detailed descriptive passages 라는 지금까지의 short story를 중시하던 것과는 다른 태도의 서술이 나온다. 그러나 다시금 whereas 로 반전을 시킴으로서 자신의 진짜 생각 즉 short story 에 대한 생각을 드러낸다.

도치는 주어와 동사의 위치를 바꿔줌으로서 일반적 문장구조와는 다른 차별성을 부여해서 읽는 이로 하여금 필자의 말하고져 하는 것을 더 빨리 감지하게 하는 부각기술이다. 그러니 당연히 도치가 나오면 주제문과 정답이 있다.

Among 이하의 보어가 맨 앞에 나왔기에 도치가 일어났다. 그렇다면 여기에 주제문이 있는 것이고 필자는 반드시 certain 이라는 “분명한”의 의미를 가지는 형용사를 전면에 내세워 앞으로 말할 특징은 wired, networked and global 라는 것을 더 부각시켜서 보여주고 있다.

A simple experiment will distinguish two of human nature. Gather a throng of people and pour them into a ferry-boat. By the time boat has swung into the river you will find that a certain proportion have taken the trouble to climb upstairs, in order to be out on deck and see what is to be seen as they cross over.

The rest have settled indoors to think what they will do upon reaching the other side. We may divide all the alert passengers on the boat into two classes-those who are interested in "crossing the rivers" and those who are merely interested in getting across.

And we may divide all the people of the earth or all the moods of people, in the same way. Some of them are chiefly occupied with attaining ends, and some with receiving experiences. Some distinction of the two will be more marked when we name the first mind practical, and the second poetic, for common knowledge recognizes that a person poetic or in a poetic mood is impractical, and practical person is intolerant of poetry.

수표현을 잡아냈으면 전체적 구조는 완전히 움켜 쥔 것이다

two 라는 수표현이 계속반복해서 나오고 있다 그렇다면 이것은 두개의 구분에 의한 작가가 하려는 말이 이 글의 가장 중요한 흐름의 맥이 될 것이다 무엇을 나누었는가? 그것만 알면 된다

앞 문단에서 도입은 a certain proportion 이라고 해서 일부를 표현하고 나머지를 rest 라고 했다면 거기서 앞으로 계속 전개되는 two 가 무엇인지에 대하여 먼저 소개를 한 것이니 반드시 그 부분을 체크해야 한다. 하나는 “crossing the river"(특히 점수를 쉽게 주려고 따옴표까지 했다)에만 관심을 가지는 사람들이고 하나는 역시 수표현의 하나인 merely 단지 도착하는 것에만 관심을 가지는 사람들로 나눠서 전개를 하고 있다.

14-17해석) 간단한 실험을 통해 인간본성은 두가지 유형으로 구분 할 수 있다. 한 무리의 사람들을 모아서 그들을 나룻배에 태워봐라. 배가 강으로 흘러 들어가면 갑판에 나가 강을 건너며 무엇을 구경할 수 있는 지를 보기 위해 수고를 마다않고 위층으로 올라가는 부류가 있다는 것을 보게 될 것이다. 나머지는 선내에 머물며 강 건너편에 도착하자마자 무엇을 할 것인가를 생각한다. 우리는 탑승중인 모든 주의 깊은 승객들을 강을 건너가는 데 간심이 있는 사람들과 강을 건너고 있다는 자체에만 관심이 있는 사람들 두 부류로 분류 할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 우리는 지구상의 모든 사람들, 즉 모든 종류의 사람들을 같은 식으로 구분할 수 있을 것이다. 어떤 이들은 목적을 달성하는데 주로 관심이 있고, 또 어떤 이들은 경험을 얻는데 주로 관심이 있다. 첫 번째 부류를 실질적, 두 번째 부류를 시적이라고 칭한다면 두 부류간의 구분이 보다 분명해질 것이다. 왜냐하면 시적이거나 시적 분위기의 사람은 실질적이지 못하며, 또한 실질적인 사람은 시를 너무도 싫어하기 때문이다.

순서문제에서는 정관사를 유념하면 답이 보인다

이글은 특히 (2)(3)(4)에서 명확하게 수표현을 쓰고 있어서 한결 답 찾기가 쉽다. 그리고 순서를 배열하거나 끼워 넣는 문제들에서는 반드시 정관사를 점검한다. 거기에 남들은 쉽게 보지 못하는 힌트가 있다.

the subject 는 피실험자 그중에서도 그 피실험자 라고 했으니 앞에서 반드시 피실험자에 대한 언급이 한번은 나왔다는 사실을 주목해야 한다 그러니 ①은 답이 될 수가 없다 . ②와③에서는 three 라는 수 표현을 통해서 제시를 하고 거기에 one another third를 가고 있으니 연달아 나와야 할 것이다. 그리고 나서 그 세 그룹에게 궁극적으로 무엇을 실험해서 무엇의 반응을 보았는지가 문제되어야 하기에 ④ 가 정답이 된다.

 

의사들은 피실험자들의 팔 주위를 꽉 묶어서 그들에게 상당한 고통을 일으켰다.
