1. 'be worth + 동명사'는 '~할 만한 가치가 있다'라는 뜻이다.

2. 동명사 부분은 형태상 능동태이지만 주어와는 '동사 - 목적어' 관계, 즉 수동의 관계가 성립한다. 수동의 의미를 갖는다고 하여 동명사를 수동태로 쓰지 않는다. 또한 동명사대신 부정사를 쓸 수 없다.

ex) This movie is worth seeing. (O)
       This movie is worth being seen. (X)
       This movie is worth to see. (X)
       This movie is worth to be seen. (X)

3. 'be worth + 동명사' 구문에서 주어와 동명사 간에는 '동사 - 목적어'관계가 성립하므로 주어를 It 가주어로 대체하고 주어부를 동사의 목적어 자리에 둘 수 있다. 하지만 이때도 부정사를 쓸 수 없다.

ex) This movie is worth seeing.
    = It is worth seeing this movie. (O)
       It is worth to see this movie. (X)

4. 비슷한 구문으로 'be worthy of + 동명사' , 'be worthy + to R'이 있다.
전자는 주어와 동명사 간에 능동, 수동의 관계가 모두 가능하나, 후자는 주어와 부정사간에 '동사 - 목적어' 관계가 아닌 언제나 '주어 - 술어'관계가 성립한다.

ex) His essays are worth reading.
      = His essays are worthy of reading.
      = His essays are worthy of being read.
      = His essays are worthy to be read.

5. ' It is worth while + 동명사[to R] + 목적어' 구문도 같은 의미이다.

ex) His essays are worth reading.
= It is worth while reading his essays.
= It is worth while to read his essays.

6. 'It is worth while + 동명사[to R] + 목적어' 의 경우 목적어를 주어 자리로 대체하여 쓸 수 있다. 단, 동명사가 있는 구문에선 목적어를 주어 자리에 쓰지 않는 이 일반적이다.

ex) It is worth while to read his essays. (= It is worth while reading his essays.)
= His essays are worth while to read.
= HIs essays are worth while reading. (잘 쓰지 않는 표현)
