must, should, have to, need to, it is necessary to do ~

* If he does something wrong, he must accept his errors frankly, make an effort to obtain forgiveness, and make compensation if that is possible. *1998

* It is necessary to establish better educational programs for teaching the Korean language to foreign workers. *2001

* A clear introduction should be made if you want to build good social relationships with others. *2001

* You are going to have to master these skills eventually anyway. *1997

* It needs to be remembered that efforts to change lead frequently to important improvement and growth in our lives. *2000

* It needs to be remembered that efforts to change lead frequently to important improvement and growth in our lives. *2000

   기억하다 - remember, keep in mind, bear in mind, etc.

   중요하다 - matter, count, etc

   알아, 알아내다 - know, understand, learn, find, etc.

    - belief, certainly, truth, fact, need, consequence, rusult, lesson, etc

   중요한 - important, significant, crucial, critical, main, etc.

* My belief is that all music has an expressive power, some more and some less, but that all music has a certain meaning behind the notes. *1998

* When Garfield interviewed top people in major industries, he found that they knew how to relax and could leave their work at the office. *2000

* Thomas Jefferson once said that what matters is the courage of one's convictions. *1998

a. Some people still believe that they can achieve security by showing force.

b. For a long time, people have believed that photographs tell us the truth.

c. A common belief is that if we find someone who likes to do the same things we do, then we will get along and we will be happy.

d. We often hear that high achievers are hard-working people who bring work home and labor over it until bedtime.

문장 b는 for a long time과 have believed에서, 이 내용 역시 뒤에서 바뀔 가능성이 높다는 것을 알 수 있다.

예시 - for example, for instance, for one thing..

대조 - however, but, yet, in contrast, instead, on the other hand, on the contrary..

결과 - therefore, so, thus, consequently, as a result..

첫 문장이 주제문이라는 생각이 들면, 그 다음 내용에 however, but, yet, in contrast, instead, on the contrary 등이 오는지 살핀다.

1. for example, for instance, another, also

For their own benefit, companies have various ways of offering lower prices. One way of doing this is a trade discount. It is offered to the shops or businesses that buy goods on a large scale and sell them. There is also a quantity discount, which is offered to individuals who order quantities of a product. The company gives a price break to these buyers because they help cut the costs of selling, storing, shipping, and billing. Finally, a cash discount is a lower price offered to people who pay in cash.

① Types of Discount Pricing              ② Ways to Improve Products

③ How to Buy Products in Cash          ④ Locations of Discount Stores

⑤ How to Start a Business

It would be costly not to use your language properly. Your language influences others, and their reactions to you may be determined by it. For example, your language use affects your teachers' attitudes toward you. It affects your parents' responses to your requests. It can also affect your friends' understanding of you and their feelings toward you. It may even determine your ability to get a particular job or move to a higher position in your workplace.

① means of mass communication          ② how to become a teacher

③ the importance of language use         ④ understanding one's own feelings

⑤ the theory of language development

for example, for instance, for one thing

   In general, every achievement requires trial and error. As youth, we need not feel ashamed of making mistakes in trying to find or win our place in a social group. It is not easy to learn to fit into a group or to develop a personality that helps us to fit in. It is somewhat like learning to play a game like baseball or basketball. We can hardly expect to learn without making a good many mistakes in the process.

① Look before you leap.     ② Like father, like son.

③ No news is good news.   ④ Out of sight, out of mind.

⑤ Rome was not built in a day.

It is surprising how many times our feelings of despair and anger can be eased if we act instead of just thinking over problems. Play  and  work  are healthy actions, relieving the tensions produced by our emotional upsets. Play is physically restful and relieves tensions as we share our emotions with others. Work, too, is an effective means of working off anger and using overflowing energy. Sometimes, ideas come as we  begin to act. Action relieves tensions and sets us free.

  * relieve:경감시키다

① Results of Emotional Upsets          ② Differences Between Anger and Upsets

③ Sources of Despair and Anger        ④ Positive Effects of Actions

⑤ Need for Positive Thinking

* 암기하세요*

Competition is an important part of development in many ways. At the personal level, competition allows us to become the best individual we can be. By competing with others in sports, for example, we can raise our level of athletic performance. In business, competition controls the market by making companies develop new ideas to ensure survival. Within industries, companies are always trying to develop products that are one step better than those of other companies. For those who fail to compete successfully, their very survival can be in question.

① The Life of Athletes                         ② The Control of Market

③ The Role of Companies                      ④ The Function of Society

⑤ The Importance of Competition

* 암기하세요 *

첫 문장에 many / a lot of / various / ~등이 오면 다음에는 구체적인 예가 온다.

Have you heard the saying : “A problem shared is a problem halved”? If you keep your problem to yourself, it can seem a great deal worse than it really is. If you talk to somebody about your problem, you can come to see it in a different light. Putting an emotion into wards and saying it out loud often helps. Also, you will sometimes find that the person you talk to can convince you that there is really nothing to worry about at all.

  ① Sharing of Your Problems         ② Difficulties of Keeping Promises

  ③ Aspects of Your Emotions       ④ Understanding of Friendship

  ⑤ Effects of Critical Words

* 암기하세요 *

  → 만약 however, but, in contrast: instead, on the contrary 등이 나오면 첫 문장이 뒤집어 진다

    ① therefore, so, thus, consequently, as a result 혹은

    ② however, but, yet, in contrast, instead, on the contrary

다시 말해 ’S + V , But S + V'와 ‘S + V, but S + V' 둘 다 가능하다. but이 두 번째 경우로 사용되면 눈을 크게 떠야 한다.

A symphony orchestra can fill a whole building and make it ring with music. But this beautiful sound, which can be joyful of sad, exciting of relaxing, is the result of planning and working together. Just as painters choose different color for their works of art, composers choose the sound of different instruments to produce their music. The purpose of a symphony orchestra is not to play section by section. The word "symphony" means "sounding together." This sounding together is what creates the wonderful music we all love.

  * instruments : 악기, 도구

  ① Action speak louder than words            ② Don't put all your eggs in one baskets.

  ③ One man's music is another man's noise    ④ Every man knows his own business best.

  ⑤ The whole is more than the sum of its parts.

* 알아두세요 *

Since the mid-1990s, teaching Korean to foreigners has made quiet and steady progress. Many universities now offer Korean language programs in Korea and abroad, and many textbooks have been produced for learners of Korean. Only a small number of foreigners, however, have benefited from this progress. Most foreign workers are being taught by Korean coworkers or volunteers who have no or little teaching experience. Thus, it is necessary to establish better educational programs for teaching the Korean language to foreign workers.

* 암기하세요 *

마지막 문장에 지금처럼 thus나 therefore, so, as a result, consequently와 같은 표현이 오면 거의 99% 주제문에 해당한다.

마지막 문자에 나온 it is necessary to establish 부분. 즉, it is necessary to do~는 should, must, have to와 같은 선상에서 봐야 한다.

We often hear that high achievers are hard-working people who bring work home and labor over it until bedtime. When Garfield interviewed top people in major industries, however, he found that they knew how to relax and could leave their work at the office. They also spent a healthy amount of time with their family and friends. Successful people are willing to work hard, but within strict limits. For them, work is not everything. Will you work hard all the time?

① The Division of Labor              ② Economy and Industries

③ A Balanced Life and Success        ④ Causes of Family Problems

⑤ The Importance of Homework

* 암기하세요 *

Growing as a person may take you to new places and present new challenges. These may be stressful, but feeling stress is a natural, necessary part of recognizing a weakness and trying out a new behavior. It is often comfortable and easy to stay the way we are. Giving up old comforts and habits is very hard. Is is small wonder, then, that people dislike changing. Yet it needs to be remembered that efforts to change lead frequently to important improvement and growth in our lives.

* 주목하세요 *

There is no doubt that our education does not meet high standards in such basic skills as mathematics and language. And we realize that our youngsters are ignorant of Latin, put Mussolini in the same category as Dostoevski, and cannot recite the Periodic Table by heart. Would we, however, prefer to fill the developing minds of our children with hundreds of geometry problems or the names of all the rivers in the world? Do we really want to frustrate their opportunities for self-expression?

* the Periodic Table : 주기율표      * geometry : 기하학

* 주목하세요 *

No one has to let errors of the past destroy his present or cloud his future. The glorious fact is that we can always have a new beginning. Naturally, a wise person will try to avoid feelings of guilt by avoiding the acts that cause them. He will look and exercise his moral judgement before he leaps. But if he does something wrong, he must accept his errors frankly, make an effort to obtain forgiveness, and make compensation if that is possible. Then he can go his way with an untrouble mind.

* 주목하세요 *

→ however, but, yet, in contrast, instead, on the contrary가 나와 의미상의 뒤집기가 있다

특히, therefore, so, thus, consequently, as a result 등은 필자가 마지막에 자신의 주장을 펼칠 때 자주 나올 수 있는 연결사 표현들이다.

How often are we introduced to someone only to forget his or her name moments later? In fact, many times we never knew the name. Today introductions are made in an unclear manner so that it is very hard to remember others' names. Forgetting people's names often means we do not really care about them. When we know their names, we are saying, "You are important. I remember you." A clear introduction should be made, therefore, if you want to build good social relationships with others.

* 주목하세요 *

Suppose two friends of mine are sitting in my room. One is 165cm tall and the other is 175cm tall. Which do you think is a man and which is a woman? In the absence of other information, you probably conclude that the shorter one is a woman while the taller one is a man. Where does this conclusion come from? Your experience tells you that men tend to be taller than women. So, From the particular men and women you have known, you draw a conclusion about men and women as a whole. In this way, many of your day-to-day judgments and guesses depend on your experience.

주제문일 것 같지만, 그래도 다음 문장을 보자 in this way..

주제를 말할 때는 확실해야 한다. probable(probably), possible(possibly), maybe등은 확실한 것과는 거리가 있다.

Science and technology have changed a great deal since the latter part of the nineteenth century. The world has changed, too. It has become more complex and increasingly specialized. There is much more to know in every field. It is not only the scientist and the computer expert who need special training now, but also the government official and the business manager. Besides, a rapid increase in the number of college graduates has made the competition for jobs much greater than it used to be. The one best qualified, the expert, wins.

Don't be surprised if you start hearing the term “information literacy” a lot. The digital revolution means that sooner or later students and adults are going to need an entirely new set of skills : how to get information, where to find it, and how to use it. Becoming good at handing information is going to be one of the most important skills of the twenty-first century, not just in school but in the real world. Thus you are going to have to master these skills eventually anyway. So deal with them now.

Besides..

* 주목하세요 *

According to ancient lore, every man is born into the world with two bags suspended from his neck-one in front and  one behind,  and both are full of faults. But the one in   front is full of his neighbor's faults ; the one behind, full of his own. Consequently, men are blind to their own faults but never lose sight of their neighbor's.

① Look before you leap.              ② Blood is thicker than water.

③ The pot calls the kettle black.      ④ Slow and steady wins the race.

⑤ Two heads are better than one.

* 주목하세요 *

a

a

People are happy with developments in medicine. Then they worry about the increased number of births. Scientists make great advances in agricultural chemistry, greatly increasing our food supply. Then our rivers become so polluted that we cannot even swim in them. We are happy with the developments in air transportation and impressed by the great airplanes. The we are frightened by the horrors of air crash or air war. We are excited by the fact that space can now be entered. But we will undoubtedly see the other side there, too.

* 주목하세요 *

happy ↔ worry  , advances in agricultural chemistry ↔ our rivers become so polluted

happy ↔frightened , excited ↔ see the other side

A terrible accident changed my life. A friend and I were driving home from a midnight movie. As we approached an intersection, we stopped at a red light. No cars seemed to be coming, so I decided to go through the red light. Immediately after we started, I lost consciousness. Later I learned that we had hit a car coming from the other direction. That accident made my friend spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, and I learned a costly lesson.

* 주목하세요 *

Reading involves a complex form of mental activity. Television viewing does not demand complex mental activities. Reading develops the powers of imagination and inner visualization. Television viewing limits the workings of the viewer's imagination. Reading is a two-way process : the reader can also write ; television viewing is a one-way street : the viewer cannot create television images. Books are ever available, ever controllable. Television controls.

What happens when you read             ② Reading habits in the television era

③ How to read books while watching TV    ④ How reading changes TV viewing habits

⑤ Difference between reading and TV viewing

* 주목하세요 *

involves a complex form of mental activity ↔ not demand complex mental activities

develops the powers of imagination ↔ limits the working of the viewer's imagination

a two-way process ↔ a one-way street

ever controllable ↔ Television controls

Today let me tell you about an experience I had on the bus. The bus was full and I was standing near the door. As people got on, they stepped on each other's feet and pushed one another in the back. I realized that the richers didn't like it, but they understood that's the way it is. In my country, when getting on a bus, people will apologize if they touch a person at all. Where I come from, everyone worries about individual space no matter where they are.

  ① cultural difference        ② work experience         ③ breakdown of a bus

  ④ travel destinations        ⑤ means of transportation

* 주목하세요 *

Recently new building codes came into effect in our city. All new houses must now be built with proper  building  materials  so  that  heat  will  not escape unnecessarily during the winter.  The laws have had a definite effect. There has been a fifty percent saving in the amount of natural gas and electricity used. The city is doing other things to save energy. Buses, partly supported by the city, transport many people throughout the area. Many new bicycle paths were made, and today there are twice as many bicycles as cars in the city.

* 주목하세요 *

지문의 문장에 must, should, have to, need to, it is necessary to do ~ 등이 들어가면 일단 눈 크게 뜨고 보자.

It is so easy to be reactive! You get caught up in the moment. You say things you don't mean. You do things you later regret. And you think, “Oh, if only I had stopped to think about it, I would never have reacted that way!” Clearly, our lives would be better if we acted based on our deepest values instead of reacting to the feelings of the moment. What we all need is a ‘pause button’ - something that enables us to stop between what happens to us and our response to it.

* 주목하세요 *
