이 구문(형용사 + 부정사구문)은 주어가 의미상 부정사구의 목적어가 된다.
전문용어로 부정사의 목적어가 주어로 상승했다고 한다.(It is hard to convince John에서 convince의 목적어가 주어로 상승해서 이 문장이(John is hard to convince) 생겼다고 한다.
John is hard to convince.
→ It is hard to convince John. (>To convince John is hard.)
His English is difficult/easy(for me) to understand.
→ It is difficult/easy (for me) to understand his English.
다음과 같은 형용사가 이 구문을 만든다.

유의: 다음은 문장의 주어가 부정사구의 목적어가 되는 점에서 위의 구문과 유사하다.

하지만 형용사로 difficult/easy가 쓰인 위의 구문과 달리 (a)는 다음과 같이 문장을 바꾸어 쓰지 못한다.
a. The food is ready to eat.
→ b. *It is ready to eat the food.
available, fit, free, sufficient 등이 만드는 부정사구문이 ready가 만드는 (a)와 그 특성이 같다.
