There was a big park in a town.
어느 마을에 큰 공원이 있었어요.
In the middle of the park there was a beautiful statue.

People called it the Happy Prince.
사람들은 그 동상을 행복한 왕자라고 불렀어요.
Its body was covered with shiny gold.
동상의 몸은 반짝이는 금으로 덮여 있었어요.
There was a beautiful ruby on the prince’s crown.
왕자의 왕관에는 아름다운 루비가 있었어요.
His sword had an emerald.
왕자의 칼에는 에메랄드가 있었어요.
His eyes were two diamonds.
왕자의 두 눈은 다이아몬드였어요.
People in the town were proud of the statue.
마을 사람들은 그 동상을 자랑스러워했어요.
One day a swallow named Timmy flew to the town.
어느 날 티미라는 제비가 마을로 날아왔어요.
She was hungry and tired.
티미는 배고프고 지쳐 있었어요.
“I want to sleep,”
“자고 싶어.”
she said.
티미가 말했어요.
Timmy slept on the prince’s feet.
티미는 왕자의 발 위에서 잠들었어요.
Suddenly, she felt water and woke up.
갑자기 물기가 느껴져서 잠에서 깼어요.
Tears were running down from the prince’s eyes.
왕자의 눈에서 눈물이 흘러내리고 있었어요.
“Hello. I’m Timmy. Why are you crying?”
“안녕하세요. 저는 티미예요. 왜 울고 계세요?”
Part 2 · 소년에게 전한 루비
A Ruby for the Sick Boy

“I’m sad,”
“슬프구나.”
said the prince.
왕자가 말했어요.
“I see everything in this town. I see a poor and sick boy. He is very sick, but he can’t visit the doctor because he is poor.”
“나는 이 마을의 모든 것을 볼 수 있어. 가난하고 아픈 소년이 보이는구나. 몹시 아프지만 가난해서 의사를 찾아갈 수 없단다.”
“Oh, poor boy. I feel sad too,”
“아, 가엾은 소년이네요. 저도 슬퍼요.”
said Timmy.
티미가 말했어요.
The Happy Prince wanted to help the boy.
행복한 왕자는 소년을 도와주고 싶었어요.
He took the ruby from his crown.
왕자는 왕관에서 루비를 떼었어요.
He gave it to the swallow.
왕자는 루비를 제비에게 주었어요.
“Timmy, I want you to give this ruby to the boy.”
“티미야, 이 루비를 소년에게 전해 주렴.”
“Where is his house?”
“소년의 집이 어디에 있나요?”
asked Timmy.
티미가 물었어요.
“Go straight and turn right at the post office. The boy lives in the yellow house. It’s between the post office and the restaurant. You can’t miss it.”
“곧장 가다가 우체국에서 오른쪽으로 돌아. 소년은 노란 집에 살고 있어. 우체국과 식당 사이에 있단다. 쉽게 찾을 수 있을 거야.”
Timmy took the ruby and flew toward the yellow house.
티미는 루비를 들고 노란 집을 향해 날아갔어요.
She found the boy inside.
티미는 집 안에 있는 소년을 발견했어요.
“This is a gift from the Happy Prince. This is for you.”
“행복한 왕자님이 보내신 선물이야. 너에게 주는 거야.”
She dropped it on his bed.
티미는 소년의 침대 위에 루비를 떨어뜨렸어요.
“What’s this? Wow, it is a ruby! Thank you, swallow. Thank you, Happy Prince!”
“이게 뭐지? 와, 루비잖아! 고마워, 제비야. 감사합니다, 행복한 왕자님!”
The sick boy was really happy.
아픈 소년은 정말 기뻤어요.
Now he could pay the doctor.
이제 의사에게 치료비를 낼 수 있었어요.
He went to the hospital and got better soon.
소년은 병원에 갔고 곧 나아졌어요.
Part 3 · 소녀를 위한 에메랄드
An Emerald and a Warm Meal

The Happy Prince was happy.
행복한 왕자는 기뻤어요.
“The boy is OK now. I’m happy.”

However, soon the Happy Prince was sad again.
하지만 얼마 지나지 않아 행복한 왕자는 다시 슬퍼졌어요.
“I see a little match girl. She sells matches on the street. Nobody buys her matches, and she has lost her shoes. She is poor and hungry,”
“어린 성냥팔이 소녀가 보여. 길에서 성냥을 팔고 있구나. 아무도 성냥을 사지 않고, 소녀는 신발마저 잃어버렸어. 가난하고 배가 고프단다.”
said the Happy Prince.
행복한 왕자가 말했어요.
“Timmy, I want you to take the emerald from my sword. Give it to her.”
“티미야, 내 칼에서 에메랄드를 가져가렴. 그걸 소녀에게 주어라.”
“Where is the little match girl?”
“성냥팔이 소녀는 어디에 있나요?”
asked the swallow.
제비가 물었어요.
“Go straight and turn left at the bakery. You can find her at the park next to the bakery.”
“곧장 가다가 빵집에서 왼쪽으로 돌아. 빵집 옆 공원에서 소녀를 찾을 수 있어.”
Timmy took the emerald and gave it to the girl.
티미는 에메랄드를 가져다가 소녀에게 주었어요.
She was surprised and thankful to the Happy Prince.
소녀는 놀랐고 행복한 왕자에게 고마워했어요.
She bought shoes and food.
소녀는 신발과 음식을 샀어요.
She was happy and the swallow was happy too.
소녀는 행복했고 제비도 행복했어요.

said the Happy Prince.

said Timmy.
티미가 말했어요.
“It’s OK. I want to help them. Please help me, Timmy.”
“괜찮아. 그들을 돕고 싶구나. 나를 도와주렴, 티미야.”
“If you say so, I’ll do it. Where do they live?”
“그렇게 말씀하신다면 할게요. 그들은 어디에 사나요?”
asked Timmy.
티미가 물었어요.
“Go straight for three blocks, and you can see a blue house on your right. You can’t miss it.”
“세 블록을 곧장 가면 오른쪽에 파란 집이 보일 거야. 쉽게 찾을 수 있어.”
Timmy took the diamonds and gave them to Hansel and Gretel’s family.
티미는 다이아몬드를 가져다가 헨젤과 그레텔의 가족에게 주었어요.
They were very happy.
그들은 무척 기뻤어요.
The father and mother didn’t abandon their children.
부모는 아이들을 버리지 않았어요.
They bought a new house and lived happily ever after.
그들은 새집을 사서 오래오래 행복하게 살았어요.
The Happy Prince couldn’t see anymore, but he was happy.

도움이 필요한 사람들에게 루비와 에메랄드, 다이아몬드를 전하느라 오랜 시간을 보내서 지쳐 있기도 했어요.
She had to fly a lot and couldn’t go to a warmer place.
많이 날아다녀야 해서 더 따뜻한 곳으로 갈 수 없었어요.
Sadly, she died in front of the Happy Prince.
안타깝게도 티미는 행복한 왕자 앞에서 죽었어요.
The Happy Prince became ugly.
행복한 왕자는 볼품없어졌어요.
He had no gold or diamonds.
금도 다이아몬드도 남아 있지 않았어요.
People didn’t like the statue.
사람들은 동상을 좋아하지 않았어요.
They said,
사람들이 말했어요.
“The Happy Prince is ugly. Let’s throw it away. He isn’t beautiful anymore, and there is a dead swallow.”
“행복한 왕자가 볼품없어졌어. 치워 버리자. 이제 아름답지도 않고 죽은 제비도 있잖아.”
They took the statue down and melted it.
사람들은 동상을 끌어내려 녹였어요.
However, the Happy Prince’s heart didn’t melt, and it was shiny.
하지만 행복한 왕자의 심장은 녹지 않았고 반짝였어요.
God watched the scene and sent an angel to the town.
하느님은 그 모습을 보고 마을로 천사를 보내셨어요.
“The Happy Prince and the little swallow are the most beautiful beings in the world. Let’s take them to heaven.”
“행복한 왕자와 작은 제비는 세상에서 가장 아름다운 존재란다. 그들을 천국으로 데려오자.”
The angel brought the heart of the prince and the dead swallow to heaven.
천사는 왕자의 심장과 죽은 제비를 천국으로 데려갔어요.
The Happy Prince and the swallow lived in heaven happily ever after.
행복한 왕자와 제비는 천국에서 오래오래 행복하게 살았어요.
