One summer day, a farmer was working on his farm.

He was diligent, so he worked very hard even though it was hot.

“Oh my! It's so hot. I wish I had a fan.”
“아이고! 정말 덥구나. 부채가 있으면 좋겠네.”
Just then, he found two fans behind a tree.

“Oh, look at the fans! They must be gifts from heaven. A red one and a blue one!”

The farmer ran to his house. He also took the fans with him.

His wife was very surprised to see him. She asked,

“What happened to your nose?”

The farmer told his wife about what had happened on the farm.

The farmer's wife picked up the blue fan and asked,

She started to fan him. Just then, the farmer's big nose got smaller!

A few days later, there was a rich man's birthday party in the town.
며칠 뒤, 마을에서 한 부자의 생일잔치가 열렸어요.
The farmer went to the party with the red fan.

“Happy birthday.”
“생신을 축하합니다.”
“Oh, thank you. Enjoy yourself.”
“아, 고맙소. 즐겁게 보내시오.”
“You look hot. Let me fan you with my fan.”

“Oh, thanks.”

The farmer started to fan him, and the rich man's nose got bigger.

All the people were surprised and ran away.

The rich man called all the best doctors in the land.

A Promise and a Trick

A few days later, the farmer visited the rich man. This time, he brought the blue fan.
며칠 뒤 농부가 부자를 찾아갔어요. 이번에는 파란 부채를 가져갔어요.
“How are you doing?”
“좀 어떠신가요?”
“I can't even raise my head because of my big nose.”
“커다란 코 때문에 고개조차 들 수가 없소.”
“I have cured this kind of problem before.”
“전에 이런 문제를 고친 적이 있습니다.”
“Oh, really? Please help me. I will give you whatever you want.”
“아, 정말이오? 제발 도와주시오. 원하는 것은 무엇이든 주겠소.”
The farmer examined the rich man like a doctor. Then he began to say some magic words.

The rich man kept his word and gave lots of money to the farmer.
부자는 약속을 지켜 농부에게 많은 돈을 주었어요.
The farmer did the same thing several times around the country.
농부는 나라 곳곳을 다니며 같은 일을 여러 번 했어요.
Soon he became rich and famous, and he didn't have to work on the farm anymore.
곧 그는 부유하고 유명해졌고, 더 이상 농장에서 일하지 않아도 되었어요.

One day, he was very bored.

His nose went through the roof and into the sky. Finally, his nose reached heaven.

The king of heaven was very angry to see such a strange thing. So he ordered,
하늘나라의 왕은 그런 이상한 것을 보고 몹시 화가 났어요. 그래서 명령했어요.
“Tie it to a tree.”

The farmer suddenly felt pain in his nose, so he started to fan himself with the blue fan.
농부는 갑자기 코가 아파서 파란 부채로 부채질하기 시작했어요.
As he fanned, he felt like he was being lifted up. As he fanned, he rose higher and higher.
부채질을 하자 몸이 위로 들리는 것 같았어요. 부채질을 할수록 그는 점점 더 높이 올라갔어요.
He cried,
그가 외쳤어요.
“Help me! Help me!”
“살려 주세요! 살려 주세요!”
But he couldn't stop fanning because it was so painful.
하지만 너무 아파서 부채질을 멈출 수 없었어요.
Finally, he reached heaven. The king found out the whole story of how the farmer had become rich.
마침내 그는 하늘나라에 도착했어요. 왕은 농부가 어떻게 부자가 되었는지 모든 사연을 알게 되었어요.
The king was really angry, so he made the farmer work in heaven forever.
왕은 몹시 화가 나서 농부가 영원히 하늘나라에서 일하게 했어요.
And the farmer's wife could never see her husband again.
그리고 농부의 아내는 다시는 남편을 볼 수 없었어요.
