별로 좋아하지 않는 트럼프였는데 요번 연설은 평이 좋군요. 어떤 분은 대학교 강의교재로 써도 좋다고 평할 정도로요. 그래서 한번 올려봅니다. ㅎㅎ 막말 대마왕으로 유명했는데 요번에는 막말한번 안하고 ...휴~~

63빌딩, 롯데월드타워, 골프선수 등을 예로 든것은 영~~~ 아니올시다라고 생각하지만요.

[영어 연설 전문]

Assembly Speaker Chung, distinguished members of this assembly, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for the extraordinary privilege to speak in this great chamber, and to address your people on behalf of the great people of the United States of America.

In our short time in your country, Melania and I have been awed by its ancient, modern wonders, and we are deeply moved by the warmth of your welcome.

Last night, President and Mrs. Moon showed us incredible hospitality in a beautiful reception at the Blue House. We had productive discussions on increasing military cooperation and improving the trade relationship between our nations on the principle of fairness and reciprocity.

Through this entire visit, it has been both our pleasure and our honor to create and celebrate a long friendship between the United States and the Republic of Korea.

This alliance between our nations was forged in the crucible of war and strengthened by the trials of history. From the Inchon landings to Pork Chop Hill, American and South Korean soldiers have fought together, sacrificed together, and triumphed together.

Almost 67 years ago, in the spring of 1951, they recaptured what remained of this city, where we are gathered so proudly today. It was the second time in a year that our combined forces took on steep casualties to retake this capital from the Communists.

Over the next weeks and months, the men soldiered through steep mountains and bloody, bloody battles. Driven back at times, they willed their way north to form the line that today divides the oppressed and the free. And there, American and South Korean troops have remained together holding that line for nearly seven decades.

By the time the armistice was signed in 1953, more than 36,000 Americans had died in the Korean War, with more than 100,000 others very badly wounded. They are heroes, and we honor them.

We also honor and remember the terrible price the people of your country paid for their freedom. You lost hundreds of thousands of brave soldiers and countless innocent civilians in that gruesome war.

Much of this great city of Seoul was reduced to rubble. Large portions of the country were scarred severely, severely hurt by this horrible war. The economy of this nation was demolished.

But as the entire world knows, over the next two generations, something miraculous happened on the southern half of this peninsula. Family by family, city by city, the people of South Korea built this country into what is today one of the great nations of the world. And I congratulate you.

In less than one lifetime, South Korea climbed from total devastation to among the wealthiest nations on Earth. Today your economy is more than 350 times larger than what it was in 1960. Trade has increased 1,900 times. Life expectancy has risen from just 53 years to more than 82 years today.

Like Korea, and since my election exactly one year ago today, I celebrate with you.

The United States is going through something of a miracle itself. Our stock market is at an all-time high. Unemployment is at a 17-year low. We are defeating ISIS. We are strengthening our judiciary, including a brilliant Supreme Court justice, and on and on and on.

Currently stationed in the vicinity of this peninsula are the three largest aircraft carriers in the world, loaded to the maximum with magnificent F-35 and F-18 fighter jets.

In addition, we have nuclear submarines appropriately positioned. The United States under my administration is completely rebuilding its military and is spending hundreds of billions of dollars to the newest and finest military equipment anywhere in the world being built right now.

I want peace through strength.

We are helping the Republic of Korea far beyond what any other country has ever done. And in the end, we will work things out far better than anybody understands or can even appreciate.

I know that the Republic of Korea, which has become a tremendously successful nation, will be a faithful ally of the United States very long into the future.

What you have built is truly an inspiration. Your economic transformation was linked to a political one. The proud sovereign and independent people of your nation demanded the right to govern themselves. You secured free parliamentary elections in 1988, the same year you hosted your first Olympics.

Soon after, you elected your first civilian president in more than three decades. And when the republic you won faced financial crisis, you lined up by the millions to give your most prized possessions -- your wedding rings, heirlooms and gold "luck" keys to restore the promise of a better future for your children.

Your wealth is measured in more than money. It is measured in achievements of the mind and achievements of spirit. Over the last several decades, your scientists have -- engineers -- and engineered so many magnificent things. You've pushed the boundaries of technology, pioneered miraculous medical treatments, and emerged as leaders in unlocking the mysteries of our universe.

Korean authors penned roughly 40,000 books this year. Korean musicians fill concert halls all around the world. Young Korean students graduate from college at the highest rates of any country. And Korean golfers are some of the best on Earth.

In fact.. and you know what I'm going to say -- the women's U.S. Open was held this year at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey..

... and it just happened to be won by a great Korean golfer, Sung Hyun Park, and eight of the top 10 players were from Korea. And the top four golfers -- one, two, three, four -- the top four were from Korea. Congratulations.

Congratulations. Now, that's something. That is really something.

Here in Seoul, architectural wonders, like the 63 Building and the Lotte World Tower -- very beautiful -- grace the sky and house the workers of many growing industries. Your citizens now help to feed the hungry, fight terrorism, and solve problems all over the world. And in a few months, you will host the world and you will do a magnificent job at the 23rd Olympic Winter Games. Good luck.

The Korean miracle extends exactly as far as the armies of free nations advanced in 1953. Twenty-five miles to the north, there it stops. It all comes to an end, dead stop. The flourishing ends and the prison state of North Korea, sadly, begins.

Workers in North Korea labor grueling hours in unbearable conditions for almost no pay. Recently, the entire working population was ordered to work for 70 days straight or else pay for a day of rest. Families live in homes without plumbing, and fewer than half have electricity. Parents bribe teachers in hopes of saving their sons and daughters from forced labor. More than a million North Koreans died of famine in the 1990s, and more continue to die of hungry today. Among children under the age of 5, nearly 30 percent of afflicted and are afflicted by stunted growth due to malnutrition.

And yet, in 2012 and 2013, the regime spent an estimated $200 million, or almost half the money that it allocated to improve living standards for its people, to instead build even more monuments, towers, and statues to glorify its dictators. What remains of the meager harvest of the North Korean economy is distributed according to perceived loyalty to a twisted regime.

Far from valuing its people as equal citizens, this cruel dictatorship measures them, scores them, and ranks them based on the most arbitrary indications of their allegiance to the state. Those who score the highest in loyalty may live in the capital city. Those who score the lowest starve.

A small infraction by one citizen, such as accidentally staining a picture of the tyrant printed in a discarded newspaper, can wreck the social credit rank of his entire family for many decades.

An estimated 100,000 North Koreans suffer in gulags, toiling in forced labor, and enduring torture, starvation, rape, and murder on a constant basis.

In one known instance, a nine-year-old boy was imprisoned for 10 years because his grandfather was accused of treason. In another, a student was beaten in school for forgetting a single detail about the life of Kim Jong-un. Soldiers have kidnapped foreigners and forced them to work as language tutors for North Korean spies.

In the part of Korea that was a stronghold for Christianity before the war, Christians and other people of faith who are found praying or holding a religious book of any kind are now detained, tortured, and, in many cases, even executed.

North Korean women are forced to abort babies that are considered ethnically inferior. And if these babies are born, the newborns are murdered. One woman's baby born to a Chinese father was taken away in a bucket. The guard said it did not deserve to live because it was impure. So why would China feel an obligation to help North Korea?

The horror of life in North Korea is so complete that citizens pay bribes to government officials to have themselves exported aboard as slaves. They would rather be slaves than live in North Korea.

To attempt to flee is a crime punishable by death. One person who escaped remarked, "When I think about it now, I was not a human being. I was more like an animal. Only after leaving North Korea did I realize what life was supposed to be."

And so, on this peninsula, we have watched the results of a tragic experiment in a laboratory of history. It is a tale of one people, but two Koreas. One Korea in which the people took control of their lives and their country and chose a future of freedom and justice, of civilization and incredible achievement, and another Korea in which leaders imprison their people under the banner of tyranny, fascism, and oppression.

The results of this experiment are in, and they are totally conclusive.

When the Korean War began in 1950, the two Koreas were approximately equal in GDP per capita. But by the 1990s, South Korea's wealth had surpassed North Korea's by more than 10 times. And today, the South's economy is over 40 times larger. So you started the same a short while ago, and now you're 40 times larger. You're doing something right.

Considering the misery wrought by the North Korean dictatorship, it is no surprise that it has been forced to take increasingly desperate measures to prevent its people from understanding this brutal contrast. Because the regime fears the truth above all else, it forbids virtually all contact with the outside world. Not just my speech today, but even the most commonplace facts of South Korean life are forbidden knowledge to the North Korean people.

Western and South Korean music is banned. Possession of foreign media is a crime punishable by death. Citizens spy on fellow citizens. Their homes are subject to search at any time, and their every action is subject to surveillance. In place of a vibrant society, the people of North Korea are bombarded by state propaganda practically every waking hour of the day.

North Korea is a country ruled as a cult. At the center of this military cult is a deranged belief in the leader's destiny to rule as parent-protector over a conquered Korean peninsula and an enslaved Korean people.

The more successful South Korea becomes, the more decisively you discredit the dark fantasy at the heart of the Kim regime. In this way, the very existence of a thriving South Korean republic threatens the very survival of the North Korean dictatorship.

This city and this assembly are living proof that a free and independent Korea not only can but does stand strong, sovereign, and proud among the nations of the world.

Here the strength of the nation does not come from the false glory of a tyrant. It comes from the true and powerful glory of a strong and great people, the people of the Republic of Korea, a Korean people who are free to live, to flourish, to worship, to love, to build, and to grow their own destiny.

In this republic, the people have done what no dictator ever could. You took, with the help of the United States, responsibility for yourselves and ownership of your future. You had a dream, a Korean dream, and you built that dream into a great reality.

In so doing, you performed the Miracle on the Han that we see all around us, from the stunning skyline of Seoul to the plains and peaks of this beautiful landscape. You have done it freely, you have done it happily, and you have done it in your own very beautiful way.

This reality, this wonderful place, your success is the greatest cause of anxiety, alarm, and even panic to the North Korean regime. That is why the Kim regime seeks conflict abroad, to distract from total failure that they suffer at home.

Since the so-called armistice, there have been hundreds of North Korean attacks on Americans and South Koreans. These attacks have included the capture and torture of the brave American soldiers of the USS Pueblo, repeated assaults on American helicopters, and the 1969 downing of a U.S. surveillance plane that killed 31 American servicemen.

The regime has made numerous lethal incursions in South Korea, attempted to assassinate senior leaders, attacked South Korean ships, and tortured Otto Warmbier, ultimately leading to that fine young man's death.

All the while, the regime has pursued nuclear weapons with the deluded hope that it could blackmail its way to the ultimate objective. So -- and that objective we are not going to let it have. We are not going to let it have. All of Korea is under that spell divided in half. South Korea will never allow what's going on in North Korea to continue to happen.

The North Korean regime has pursued its nuclear and ballistic missile programs in defiance of every assurance, agreement, and commitment it has made to the United States and its allies. It's broken all of those commitments. After promising to freeze its plutonium program in 1994, it repeated the benefits of the deal and then, and then immediately continued its illicit nuclear activities. In 2005, after years of diplomacy, the dictatorship agreed to ultimately abandon its nuclear programs and return to the treaty on nonproliferation. But it never did. And worse, it tested the very weapons it said it was going to give up.

In 2009, the United States gave negotiations yet another chance and offered North Korea the open hand of engagement. The regime responded by sinking a South Korean Navy ship, killing 46 Korean sailors. To this day, it continues to launch missiles over the sovereign territory of Japan and all other neighbors, test nuclear devices, and develop ICBMs to threaten the United States itself.

The regime has interpreted America's past restraint as weakness. This would be a fatal miscalculation.

This is a very different administration than the United States has had in the past. Today I hope I speak not only for our countries, but for all civilized nations when I say to the North: Do not underestimate us. And do not try us.

We will defend our common security, our shared prosperity, and our sacred liberty. We did not choose to draw here on this peninsula

this magnificent peninsula the thin line of civilization that runs around the world and down through time. But here it was drawn, and here it remains to this day.

It is the line between peace and war, between decency and depravity, between law and tyranny, between hope and total despair. It is a line that has been drawn many times in many places throughout history. To hold that line is a choice free nations have always had to make.

We have learned together the high cost of weakness and the high stakes of its defense. America's men and women in uniform have given their lives in the fight against Nazism, imperialism, Communism, and terrorism. America does not seek conflict or confrontation. But we will never run from it.

History is filled with discarded regimes that have foolishly tested America's resolve. Anyone who doubts the strength or determination of the United States should look to our past, and you will doubt it no longer.

We will not permit America or our allies to be blackmailed or attacked. We will not allow American cities to be threatened with destruction. We will not be intimidated. And we will not let the worst atrocities in history be repeated here on this ground we fought and died so hard to secure.

That is why I come here to the heart of a free and flourishing Korea with a message for the peace-loving nations of the world: The time for excuses is over. Now is the time for strength. If you want peace, you must stand strong at all times. The world...

The world cannot tolerate the menace of a rogue regime that threatens with nuclear devastation. All responsible nations must join forces to isolate the brutal regime of North Korea, to deny it and any form, any form of it, you cannot support, you cannot supply, you cannot accept.

We call on every nation, including China and Russia, to fully implement U.N. Security Council resolutions, downgrade diplomatic relations with the regime, and sever all ties of trade and technology. It is our responsibility and our duty to confront this danger together, because the longer we wait, the greater the danger grows and the fewer the options become.

And to those nations that choose to ignore this threat -- or worse still, to enable it -- the weight of this crisis is on your conscience. I also have come here to this peninsula to deliver a message directly to the leader of the North Korean dictatorship.

The weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer. They are putting your regime in grave danger. Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face.

North Korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned. It is a hell that no person deserves.

Yet despite every crime you have committed against God and man, you are ready to offer -- and we will do that -- we will offer a path to a much better future. It begins with an end to the aggression of your regime, a stop to your development of ballistic missiles, and complete, verifiable, and total denuclearization.

A sky-top view of this peninsula shows a nation of dazzling light in the South and a mass of impenetrable darkness in the North. We seek a future of light, prosperity, and peace. But we are only prepared to discuss this brighter path for North Korea if its leaders cease their threats and dismantle their nuclear program.

The sinister regime of North Korea is right about only one thing: The Korean people do have a glorious destiny. But they could not be more wrong about what that destiny looks like. The destiny of the Korean people is not to suffer in the bondage of oppression, but to thrive in the glory of freedom.

What South Koreans have achieved on this peninsula is more than a victory for your nation. It is a victory for every nation that believes in the human spirit. And it is our hope that someday soon all of your brothers and sisters of the North will be able to enjoy the fullest of life intended by God.

Your republic shows us all of what is possible. In just a few decades, with only the hard work, courage, and talents of your people, you turned this war-torn land into a nation blessed with wealth, rich in culture, and deep in spirit. You built a home where all families can flourish and where all children can shine and be happy.

This Korea stands strong and tall among the great community of independent, confident, and peace-loving nations. We are nations that respect our citizens, cherish our liberty, treasure our sovereignty, and control our own destiny. We affirm the dignity of every person and embrace the full potential of every soul. And we are always prepared to defend the vital interests of our people against the cruel ambition of tyrants.

Together, we dream of a Korea that is free, a peninsula that is safe, and families that are reunited once again. We dream of highways connecting North and South, of cousins embracing cousins, and this nuclear nightmare replaced with the beautiful promise of peace.

Until that day comes, we stand strong and alert. Our eyes are fixed to the North and our hearts praying for the day when all Koreans can live in freedom.

어젯밤 문재인 대통령님 내외는 청와대에서 있었던 멋진 연회에서 극진히 환대해주셨습니다. 우리는 군사협력 증진과 공정성 및 호혜의 원칙 하에 양국 통상관계를 개선하는 부분에서 생산적 논의를 했습니다. 방문 일정 내내 한미 양국의 오랜 우의를 기념할 수 있어 기뻤고 영광이었습니다.

우리 양국의 동맹은 전쟁의 시련 속에서 싹텄고 역사의 실험으로 강해졌습니다. 인천 상륙작전에서 폭찹힐 전투에 이르기까지 한미 장병들은 함께 싸웠고, 함께 사망했고, 함께 승리했습니다.

거의 67년 전인 1951년 봄, 양국 군은 우리가 오늘 함께하는 서울을 탈환했습니다. 우리 연합군이 공산군으로부터 수도를 재탈환하기 위해 큰 사상자를 낸 것이 그것으로 그 해 두 번째였습니다.

1953년 정전협정 서명 당시 3만6천여 미국인이 한국전에서 전사했고 10여만 명이 부상을 입었습니다. 굉장히 큰 부상이었습니다. 이들은 영웅이며 경의를 표합니다.

우리는 또한 한국민들이 자유를 위해 치른 엄청난 대가를 기억하며 경의를 표합니다. 한국은 수십만 명의 용감한 장병들과 셀 수 없이 무고한 시민들을 끔찍한 전쟁으로 잃었습니다. 아름다운 서울 대부분은 초토화됐습니다. 한국의 많은 지역에 전쟁 상흔이 남았습니다. 그리고 한국의 경제는 큰 영향을 받았습니다.

하지만 전 세계가 알다시피 그 이후 두 세대에 거쳐 기적과 같은 일이 한반도 남쪽에서 일어났습니다. 한 가구씩, 한 도시씩 한국민들은 이 나라를 오늘의 모습으로 바꿔놨습니다. 한국은 이제 전 세계적으로 훌륭한 국가로 발돋움했습니다. 이에 대해 축하의 말씀을 드립니다. (박수)

짧은 시간 안에 한국은 끔찍한 참화를 딛고 일어나 지구상 가장 부강한 국가 반열에 이르렀습니다. 오늘날 한국 경제 규모는 1960년과 비교해 350배, 교역은 근 1천900배 가까이 증가했습니다. 평균 수명 역시 53년에 불과했던 것이 이제는 82세 이상이 됐습니다.

이러한 한국과 마찬가지로 제가 미국에서 당선된 작년부터 함께 축하할 일들이 있습니다. (박수) 미국은 마찬가지로 기적과 같은 일을 경험하고 있습니다. 주식시장은 그 어느 때보다 활황을 이루고 있습니다. 실업률은 17년째 최저치를 기록하고 있습니다. 우리는 이슬람국가(IS)를 물리쳤고 우리는 사법부를 강화하고 있습니다. 그리고 굉장히 훌륭한 대법원장을 모셨습니다. 이보다 많은 사례가 있습니다.

지금 현재 한반도 주변에 배치된 것들이 3대의 큰 항공모함입니다. 이 항공모함에는 F35와 F18이 장착돼 있습니다. 우리는 핵잠수함을 적절하게 배치해두고 있습니다. 미국은 완전히 군사력을 재구축하고 있고 수천억에 달하는 돈을 지출해서 가장 새롭고 가장 발전된 무기체계를 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

저는 힘을 통해 평화를 유지하고자 합니다. (박수) 우리는 한국이 그 어떤 나라보다 잘되기를 원하고 많은 도움을 드리고 있습니다. 그리고 이를 위해 어떤 누군가가 이해할 수 있는 것보다도 많은 노력을 기울이고 있습니다. 우리는 한국이 너무나 성공적인 국가로 성장했다는 것을 알고 있으며, 신뢰할 동맹국이라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 미래에도 그렇게 될 것을 믿어 의심치 않고 있습니다. (박수)

한국이 이뤄낸 것은 정말로 큰 감명을 주고 있습니다. 한국의 경제적 탈바꿈은 정치적 탈바꿈으로 이어졌습니다. 주권 한국의 자긍심 넘치는 독립적 국민들은 스스로 통치할 권리를 요구했습니다. 1988년 자유총선을 치렀는데, 이게 바로 올림픽을 개최한 그 해입니다. 곧이어 30여 년 만에 처음으로 문민 대통령을 배출했습니다.

여러분의 손으로 이룩한 나라가 금융위기에 처했을 때 수백만씩 줄을 지어 가장 값나가는 물건들을 기꺼이 내놓았습니다. 결혼반지, 행운의 열쇠를 내놓으며 자녀들의 더 나은 미래를 담보하고자 했던 것들이 바로 여러분들입니다. (박수) 여러분의 금은 단순한 금전적 가치 이상이며 마음과 정신의 업적입니다.

지난 수십 년간 한국의 과학자와 엔지니어들이 너무나 많은 훌륭한 것들을 발견해냈습니다. 기술 한계를 확대하고 기적적인 의학 치료법을 개척하며 우주의 불가사의를 풀어내는 리더로 부상했습니다. 한국 작가들은 연간 약 4만 권의 책을 저술하고 있습니다. 한국 음악가들은 전 세계에 콘서트장을 메우고 있습니다. 한국 학생들의 대학 졸업률은 전 세계 최고 수준에 달하고 있습니다.

한국의 골프 선수들은 세계 최고의 기량을 갖추고 있습니다. (박수) 사실 제가 무슨 말씀 드릴지 아실 거라 생각합니다만 올해 US오픈 여자골프대회가 뉴저지 트럼프 내셔널골프 클럽에서 열렸는데, 박성현 씨라는 훌륭한 한국 여성 골퍼분이 바로 여기서 승리했습니다. 이 대회에서 상위권 10명 중 8명이 모두 한국 선수였습니다. 축하드립니다. (박수) 이것은 대단한 일이라고 생각하고 있습니다.

이곳 서울에서는 63빌딩이나 롯데월드 타워 같은 멋진 건축물들이 하늘을 수놓고 있고, 여러 성장 산업에 종사하는 근로자들의 일터가 되고 있습니다. 한국은 이제 굶주린 이들에게 식량을 제공하고 테러에 맞서며 전 세계 곳곳의 문제 해결에 힘이 되고 있습니다. 몇 달 후면 여러분들이 23차 동계올림픽이란 멋진 행사 개최합니다. 행운을 빕니다. (박수)

한국의 기적은 자유국가의 병력이 1953년 진격했던 곳, 이곳으로부터 24마일 북쪽으로만 미쳤습니다. 기적은 거기서 멈춥니다. 거기서 모두 끝납니다. 바로 거기서 멈춰지는 것입니다. 번영은 거기서 끝나고 북한이라는 감옥국가가 시작됩니다.

북한 노동자들은 끔찍하게 긴 시간을 견디기 힘든 조건에서 무보수로 일합니다. 최근에는 전 노동 인구에게 70일 연속 노동하든지 하루 치 휴식 대가를 지불하라는 명령을 내렸습니다. 북한 주민들은 배관이 갖춰지지 않은 곳에서 생활하고 전기를 쓰는 가정은 절반에도 못 미칩니다. 부모들은 교사에게 촌지를 건네며 자녀들이 강제노역에서 해방될 것이라는 희망을 품습니다. 100만 이상 북한 주민들이 기근으로 1990년대에 사망했습니다. 더 많은 사람들이 기아로 계속 목숨을 잃고 있습니다. 5세 미만 영유아 중 거의 30%가 영양실조로 인한 발육부진에 시달립니다.

그런데도 2012년과 2013년 북한 체제는 2억 달러로 추정되는 돈, 즉 주민 생활 수준을 향상시키기 위해 배분한 돈의 절반 이상을 더 많은 기념비, 탑, 동상을 건립하는 등 독재자 우상화에 썼습니다. 북한 경제가 거둬들이는 미미한 수확은 비뚤어진 체제에 대한 충성도에 따라 배분됩니다.

주민들을 동등 시민으로 여기기는커녕 잔혹한 독재자는 주민들을 저울질하고, 점수 매기고, 국가에 대한 충성도를 자의적으로 평가해서 등급을 매깁니다. 충성도에서 높은 점수를 딴 사람들은 수도인 평양에 거주할 수 있습니다. 점수가 가장 낮은 사람들은 먼저 아사합니다.

한 사람의 작은 위반, 예를 들면 버려진 신문지에 인쇄된 독재자 사진에 얼룩을 실수로 묻히면 이것이 그 사람 가족 전체의 사회신용 등급에 수십 년간 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다. 10만으로 추정되는 북한 주민들이 노동수용소에서 강제노역하고 고문과 기아, 강간, 살인을 견뎌내며 고통받고 있습니다.

알려진 한 사례에서는 한 9살짜리 소년이 10년간 수감생활을 하기도 했습니다. 소년의 조부가 반역죄로 고발당했다는 이유였습니다. 또 한 학생은 김정일의 삶에 대한 세부사항 하나를 잊었다고 학교에서 구타당했습니다. 군인들은 외국인을 납치해서 북한 첩보원에, 어학교사로 일하게 합니다.

전쟁 전 기독교 근거지였던 곳이었지만 이제는 기독교도들과 다른 기타 종교인들도 기도하거나 종교 서적을 보유했다가 적발되면 억류와 고문, 그리고 대부분 처형까지 감수해야 합니다.

북한 여성들은 인종적으로 열등하다고 간주하는 태아를 강제 낙태해야 합니다. 이 아이들이 출생하면 신생아 때 살해됩니다. 중국인 아버지를 둔 한 아기는 바구니에 담긴 채 끌려갔습니다. 경비대는 이 아이 피가 불순해서 살 가치가 없다고 했습니다.

그러면 왜 중국이 북한을 도와야겠다는 의무감을 느껴야 합니까? 북한 생활이 너무 끔찍해서 주민들은 정부 관료에게 뇌물을 주고 해외 노예로 팔려 간다고 합니다. 차라리 노예가 되기를 원하는 것입니다. 도망을 치고자 시도하게 되면 사형에 처할 범죄가 됩니다. 탈출에 성공한 한 사람은 이렇게 말했습니다. '지금 생각하면 나는 사람이 아니라 동물에 더 가까웠다. 북한을 떠나고 나서야 나는 삶이 어떤 것인지 깨달았다'고 말입니다.

그래서 오늘 한반도에서 우리는 역사의 실험실에서 벌어진 비극적 실험 결과를 목도하고 있습니다. 이것은 하나의 민족, 두 개의 한국에 대한 이야기입니다. 한쪽 한국에서는 사람들이 스스로 삶과 국가를 꾸려나가고 자유와 정의, 그리고 문명과 성취의 미래를 선택했습니다.

다른 한쪽 국가는 부패 지도자들이 압제와 파시즘 탄압으로 자국민들을 감옥에 가뒀습니다. 이 실험 결과는 이제 도출됐고 이 결과는 극명합니다.

1950년 한국전쟁 발발 시 두 한국의 1인당 국내총생산(GDP)은 거의 동일했습니다. 하지만 1990년대 들어서서 한국의 부는 북한과 비교해 10배를 넘어섰습니다. 오늘날 한국 경제는 북한대비 40배 이상에 달하고 있습니다. 그러니까 동일 선상에서 출발한 지 얼마 되지 않아서 40배 이상 성장했습니다. 굉장히 잘하고 계신 것으로 생각합니다.

북한이 초래한 고통을 고려하면, 북한 독재자가 왜 점점 필사적으로 이 극명 대비를 주민들이 알아차리지 못하게 해야 하는지 그다지 놀랄 일이 아닙니다. 북한 체제는 그 무엇보다도 진실을 두려워하기 때문에 외부 세계와의 접촉을 전면 차단하고 있습니다. 오늘 나의 연설뿐 아니라 한국 생활의 가장 평범한 사실조차도 북한 주민에게는 금단의 지식입니다. 서구와 한국의 음악 역시 금지돼 있습니다. 해외 매체를 소유할 수 있는 것도 범죄이며, 사형에 처할 수 있는 범죄입니다.

북한 주민들은 서로서로 감시합니다. 이들의 집은 언제든 수색당할 수 있습니다. 모든 행동이 정찰 대상입니다. 그래서 이런 북한 사회는 매일 이런 국가의 선전을 들어야 하는 고통에 시달립니다. 북한은 종교집단처럼 통치되는 국가입니다. 이 국가적 이단 국가의 중심에는 정복된 한반도와 노예가 된 한국인을 보호자로서 통치하는 것이 지도자의 운명이라는 착란적 믿음이 자리하고 있습니다.

한국이 성공할수록 한국은 더 결정적으로 김정은 체제 중심에 있는 어두운 환상에 손상을 입힐 수 있습니다. 이러하듯 번영하는 한국의 존재 자체가 북한 독재체제의 생존을 위협합니다.

서울과 국회는 살아있는 증거입니다. 자유롭고 독립적인 한국이 강력하고 최고이며 자랑스러울 수 있다는 것입니다. (박수) 여기에서는 국가의 힘이 폭군의 가짜 영광에서 나오는 것이 아닙니다. 강력하고 위대한 한국 국민들의 진정한 영광에서 그 힘이 나옵니다. 한국인들은 자유롭게 살면서 번창하고 예배하고 사랑하며 삶을 만들고 자신의 운명을 만들어 갈 수 있습니다. 한국에서는 그 어떤 독재자도 할 수 없었던 것을 한국 국민들이 해냈습니다. 스스로 책임을 지고 미래 주도권을 가졌습니다. 당신은 '코리안 드림'이라는 꿈을 가지고 있었습니다. 그리고 그 꿈을 현실로 만들어 냈습니다. 그렇게 함으로써 여러분들께서는 한강의 기적을 만들었습니다.

우리는 서울의 멋진 마천루에서부터 들과 산봉우리의 아름다운 경관들을 봅니다. 여러분들은 자유롭게, 행복하게 여러분들만의 아름다운 방법으로 성취했습니다.

이 아름다운 장소에서의 당신들의 성공이라는 현실은 북한 체제에 엄청난 걱정과 경종, 심지어는 패닉을 주는 가장 큰 원인이 됩니다.

그렇기 때문에 김정은 체제는 나라 밖에서 갈등을 모색합니다. 나라 안으로부터의 실패에서 눈을 돌리기 위해서입니다.

휴전 이후 북한은 미군과 한국인들에게 수없이 공격했습니다. 용맹한 미 해군들, 미 군함 푸에블로호 수병들을 붙잡아 고문하고, 반복해서 헬기를 공격하고, 1969년에는 미국 정찰기를 격추해 31명의 미군을 사망하게 했습니다. 그뿐만 아니라 북한 체제는 수없이 한국에 침투했고 고위 지도자 암살을 시도했으며 또한 한국 함선들을 공격했고, 오토 웜비어를 공격해 결국에는 이 젊은이가 죽음에 이르도록 했습니다.

이 와중에 북한 체제는 핵무기를 추구했습니다. 북한 정권은 헛된 희망을 품고 궁극적 목표를 협박으로 달성할 수 있다는 생각으로 핵무기를 개발해온 것입니다. 그 목표는 우리가 허락하지 않을 것입니다. 분단된 한국은 그 (마법·spell)에 걸려 있습니다. 한국도 지금 북한에서 일어나는 일들이 앞으로 계속 되는 것을 절대 허락하지 않을 것입니다.

북한 체제는 핵탄두 미사일 프로그램을 추구하면서 지금까지 미국과 동맹국에 한 모든 보상 합의 약속을 어겼습니다. 1994년에 플루토늄 동결한다고 약속했습니다. 하지만 약속의 혜택은 거두면서도 동시에 불법적으로 핵 활동을 지속했습니다. 수년간의 외교활동 후 2005년에는 이 독재체제는 궁극적으로 핵 프로그램을 단념하고 비확산조약에 복귀한다고 했습니다. 하지만 북한은 복귀하지 않았습니다. 더 최악인 것은, 북한이 포기하겠다고 한 핵무기 실험을 했습니다.

2009년에 미국은 대화의 여지를 다시 한 번 열었고, 북한에 손을 내밀었습니다. 하지만 북한에서 돌아온 대답은 한국 해군 함정을 침몰시키고 해군 46명을 사망케 하는 것이었습니다. 지금까지도 북한은 계속해서 이웃 국과 일본 영토로 미사일을 발사하고 핵실험하고 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM)을 개발해서 미국 자체를 위협하려 합니다.

북한 체제는 미국의 과거 자제를 유약함으로 해석했습니다. 이것은 치명적인 오산이 될 것입니다. 우리 정부는 과거 행정부와 비교했을 때 매우 다른 행정부입니다.

오늘 나는 북한에 우리 양국뿐 아니라 모든 문명국가들을 대신해 말합니다. 우리를 과소평가하지 마십시오. 또한, 우리를 시험하지도 마십시오. 우리는 공동의 안보, 우리가 공유하는 번영, 그리고 신성한 자유를 방어할 것입니다.

우리는 이 멋진 한반도에 가느다란 문명의 선을 긋는 것을 선택하지 않았습니다. (박수) 이 선은 여기에 그어졌고 여전히 남아있습니다. 선은 평화와 전쟁, 품위와 악행, 법과 폭정, 희망과 절망 사이에 그어진 선입니다. 이 선은 많은 장소에서 수차례 걸쳐 그어졌습니다. 이 선을 지키는 것이 자유국가가 늘 해야 하는 선택입니다. 우리는 유약함의 대가와 이것을 지키는 데 따르는 위험을 같이 배웠습니다. 미군들은 나치즘, 제국주의, 공산주의, 테러와 싸움을 하면서 생명을 걸었습니다.

미국은 갈등이나 대치를 원하지 않습니다. 하지만 결코 도망치지 않을 것입니다. 역사에는 버림받은 체제가 많습니다. 그들은 어리석게 미국의 결의를 실험했던 체제들이었습니다.

미국의 힘과 결의를 의심하는 자는 우리 과거를 되돌아보고 더이상 의심치 말아야 합니다. 우리는 미국이나 동맹국이 협박·공격받는 것을 허용치 않을 것입니다. 우리는 미국 도시들이 파괴위협을 받는 것을 허용하지 않을 것입니다. 협박받지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 역사상 최악의 잔혹이 이곳에서 반복되도록 하지 않을 것입니다. 이 땅은 우리가 지키기 위해 싸우고 생명을 걸었던 땅입니다. (박수)

바로 그래서 제가 이곳에 왔습니다. 자유롭고 번영하는 한국의 평화를 사랑하는 국가들을 위한 메시지를 들고 왔습니다. 변명의 시대는 끝났습니다. 이제는 힘의 시대입니다. 평화를 원한다면 우리는 늘 강력해야 합니다. (박수)

세계는 핵 파멸로 위협하는 불량정권을 관용할 수 없습니다. 책임 있는 국가들이 힘을 합쳐 북한의 잔혹한 체제를 고립시켜야 합니다. 어떤 형태로도 북한을 지원하거나 공급하거나 받아줘서는 안 됩니다.

우리는 중국과 러시아를 포함한 모든 국가들에 요구합니다. 유엔안보리 결의안을 완전히 이행하고, 북한과의 외교관계를 격하시키며 모든 무역과 기술관계를 단절시킬 것을 촉구합니다.

우리의 책임이자 의무는 이 위험에 함께 대처하는 것입니다. 왜냐하면, 기다릴수록 위험은 증가하고 선택지는 적어지기 때문입니다. (박수) 이 위협을 무시하거나 혹은 가능하게 하는 국가들에 말합니다. 이 위기의 무게가 양심을 누를 것입니다.

이곳 한반도에 온 것은 북한 독재체제의 지도자에게 직접 전할 메시지가 있어서 왔습니다. 당신이 획득하고 있는 무기는 당신을 안전하게 할 것이 아니라 체제를 심각한 위험에 빠뜨립니다. 어두운 길로 향하는 한 걸음 한걸음이 당신이 직면한 위험을 증가시킬 것입니다.

북한은 당신 할아버지가 꿈꿨던 낙원이 아닙니다. 그 누구도 가서는 안 되는 지옥입니다. 하지만 하나님과 인간에 대해 당신이 지은 범죄에도 불구하고 우리는 더 나은 미래를 위한 길을 제공할 준비가 돼 있습니다. 그 출발은 공격을 중지시키고, 탄도미사일 개발을 멈추고, 완전하고 검증 가능한 총체적 비핵화입니다. (박수)

하늘에서 한반도를 바라보면 눈 부신 빛이 남쪽에 가득하고 뚫을 수 없는 어둠 덩어리가 북쪽을 차지하고 있습니다. 우리는 빛과 번영과 평화의 미래를 원합니다. 하지만 이 같은 밝은 길을 논의할 준비가 된 경우는 북한 지도자들이 도발을 멈추고 핵 프로그램을 폐기하는 경우입니다.

사악한 북한 정권이 한 가지에 대해서는 맞게 보고 있습니다. 그것은 한민족의 운명이 영광스럽다는 것입니다. 하지만 그 모습이 무엇인지는 잘못 알고 있습니다. 한민족 운명은 억압의 굴레 속에서 고통받는 것이 아니라 영광과 자유 속에서 번영하는 것입니다. (박수)

한국인들이 한반도에서 이룩한 것은 한국의 승리, 그 이상입니다. 인류의 정신을 믿는 모든 국가의 승리입니다. 우리가 바라는 것은 곧 여러분들의 북한에 있는 형제와 자매들이 하나님이 뜻한 인생을 충만히 누리는 것입니다.

한국은 우리에게 무엇이 가능한지를 보여줬습니다. 전쟁 폐허로 변한 이 땅을 단지 몇십 년 동안 근면과 용기, 재능만 갖고 부와 풍부한 문화와 심오한 정신을 갖춘 축복받은 나라로 바꿨습니다. 한국은 모든 가정이 잘살고 모든 어린이가 빛날 나라 만들었습니다.

이런 한국은 강력하고 위대하게 국가들 사이에 서 있습니다. 자주적이고 자랑스러우며 평화를 사랑하는 국가들 사이에 있습니다. 국민을 존중하고, 자유를 소중히 여기며, 주권을 간직하고, 스스로 운명을 만드는 나라들입니다. 모든 인간의 존엄성을 확인하며, 모든 사람이 완전한 잠재력을 믿고 있습니다.

우리는 폭군의 잔인한 야심으로부터 우리 국민들을 보호할 준비가 항상 돼 있습니다. 우리는 함께 자유로운 하나의 한국, 안전한 한반도, 가족의 재회를 꿈꾸고 있습니다. 우리는 남북을 잇는 고속도로와 친척이 서로 얼싸안는 장면을 꿈꿉니다. 핵 악몽이 가고 아름다운 평화의 약속이 오는 날을 꿈꿉니다.

Thank you, thank you, President Faust, and Paul Choi, thank you so much.

It’s an honor and a thrill to address this group of distinguished alumni and supportive friends and kvelling parents. We’ve all gathered to share in the joy of this day, so please join me in congratulating Harvard’s Class of 2016.

I can remember my own college graduation, which is easy, since it was only 14 years ago. How many of you took 37 years to graduate? Because, like most of you, I began college in my teens, but sophomore year, I was offered my dream job at Universal Studios, so I dropped out. I told my parents if my movie career didn’t go well, I’d re-enroll.

It went all right.

But eventually, I returned for one big reason. Most people go to college for an education, and some go for their parents, but I went for my kids. I’m the father of seven, and I kept insisting on the importance of going to college, but I hadn’t walked the walk. So, in my fifties, I re-enrolled at Cal State -- Long Beach, and I earned my degree.

I just have to add: It helped that they gave me course credit in paleontology for the work I did on Jurassic Park. That’s three units for Jurassic Park, thank you.

Well I left college because I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and some of you know, too -- but some of you don’t. Or maybe you thought you knew but are now questioning that choice. Maybe you’re sitting there trying to figure out how to tell your parents that you want to be a doctor and not a comedy writer.

Well, what you choose to do next is what we call in the movies the ‘character-defining moment.’ Now, these are moments you’re very familiar with, like in the last Star Wars: The Force Awakens, when Rey realizes the force is with her. Or Indiana Jones choosing mission over fear by jumping over a pile of snakes.

Now in a two-hour movie, you get a handful of character-defining moments, but in real life, you face them every day. Life is one strong, long string of character-defining moments. And I was lucky that at 18 I knew what I exactly wanted to do. But I didn’t know who I was. How could I? And how could any of us? Because for the first 25 years of our lives, we are trained to listen to voices that are not our own. Parents and professors fill our heads with wisdom and information, and then employers and mentors take their place and explain how this world really works.

And usually these voices of authority make sense, but sometimes, doubt starts to creep into our heads and into our hearts. And even when we think, ‘that’s not quite how I see the world,’ it’s kind of easier to just to nod in agreement and go along, and for a while, I let that going along define my character. Because I was repressing my own point of view, because like in that Nilsson song, ‘Everybody was talkin’ at me, so I couldn’t hear the echoes of my mind.’

And at first, the internal voice I needed to listen to was hardly audible, and it was hardly noticeable -- kind of like me in high school. But then I started paying more attention, and my intuition kicked in.

And I want to be clear that your intuition is different from your conscience. They work in tandem, but here’s the distinction: Your conscience shouts, ‘here’s what you should do,’ while your intuition whispers, ‘here’s what you could do.’ Listen to that voice that tells you what you could do. Nothing will define your character more than that.

Because once I turned to my intuition, and I tuned into it, certain projects began to pull me into them, and others, I turned away from.

And up until the 1980s, my movies were mostly, I guess what you could call ‘escapist.’ And I don’t dismiss any of these movies -- not even 1941. Not even that one. And many of these early films reflected the values that I cared deeply about, and I still do. But I was in a celluloid bubble, because I’d cut my education short, my worldview was limited to what I could dream up in my head, not what the world could teach me.

But then I directed The Color Purple. And this one film opened my eyes to experiences that I never could have imagined, and yet were all too real. This story was filled with deep pain and deeper truths, like when Shug Avery says, ‘Everything wants to be loved.’ My gut, which was my intuition, told me that more people needed to meet these characters and experience these truths. And while making that film, I realized that a movie could also be a mission.

I hope all of you find that sense of mission. Don’t turn away from what’s painful. Examine it. Challenge it.

My job is to create a world that lasts two hours. Your job is to create a world that lasts forever. You are the future innovators, motivators, leaders and caretakers.

And the way you create a better future is by studying the past. Jurassic Park writer Michael Crichton, who graduated from both this college and this medical school, liked to quote a favorite professor of his who said that if you didn’t know history, you didn’t know anything. You were a leaf that didn’t know it was part of a tree. So history majors: Good choice, you’re in great shape...Not in the job market, but culturally.

The rest of us have to make a little effort. Social media that we’re inundated and swarmed with is about the here and now. But I’ve been fighting and fighting inside my own family to get all my kids to look behind them, to look at what already has happened. Because to understand who they are is to understand who were were, and who their grandparents were, and then, what this country was like when they emigrated here. We are a nation of immigrants -- at least for now.

So to me, this means we all have to tell our own stories. We have so many stories to tell. Talk to your parents and your grandparents, if you can, and ask them about their stories. And I promise you, like I have promised my kids, you will not be bored.

And that’s why I so often make movies based on real-life events. I look to history not to be didactic, ‘cause that’s just a bonus, but I look because the past is filled with the greatest stories that have ever been told. Heroes and villains are not literary constructs, but they’re at the heart of all history.

And again, this is why it’s so important to listen to your internal whisper. It’s the same one that compelled Abraham Lincoln and Oskar Schindler to make the correct moral choices. In your defining moments, do not let your morals be swayed by convenience or expediency. Sticking to your character requires a lot of courage. And to be courageous, you’re going to need a lot of support.

And if you’re lucky, you have parents like mine. I consider my mom my lucky charm. And when I was 12 years old, my father handed me a movie camera, the tool that allowed me to make sense of this world. And I am so grateful to him for that. And I am grateful that he’s here at Harvard, sitting right down there.

My dad is 99 years old, which means he’s only one year younger than Widener Library. But unlike Widener, he’s had zero cosmetic work. And dad, there’s a lady behind you, also 99, and I’ll introduce you after this is over, okay?

But look, if your family’s not always available, there’s backup. Near the end of It’s a Wonderful Life -- you remember that movie, It’s a Wonderful Life? Clarence the Angel inscribes a book with this: “No man is a failure who has friends.” And I hope you hang on to the friendships you’ve made here at Harvard. And among your friends, I hope you find someone you want to share your life with. I imagine some of you in this yard may be a tad cynical, but I want to be unapologetically sentimental. I spoke about the importance of intuition and how there’s no greater voice to follow. That is, until you meet the love of your life. And this is what happened when I met and married Kate, and that became the greatest character-defining moment of my life.

Love, support, courage, intuition. All of these things are in your hero’s quiver, but still, a hero needs one more thing: A hero needs a villain to vanquish. And you’re all in luck. This world is full of monsters. And there’s racism, homophobia, ethnic hatred, class hatred, there’s political hatred, and there’s religious hatred.

As a kid, I was bullied -- for being Jewish. This was upsetting, but compared to what my parents and grandparents had faced, it felt tame. Because we truly believed that anti-Semitism was fading. And we were wrong. Over the last two years, nearly 20,000 Jews have left Europe to find higher ground. And earlier this year, I was at the Israeli embassy when President Obama stated the sad truth. He said: ‘We must confront the reality that around the world, anti-Semitism is on the rise. We cannot deny it.’

My own desire to confront that reality compelled me to start, in 1994, the Shoah Foundation. And since then, we’ve spoken to over 53,000 Holocaust survivors and witnesses in 63 countries and taken all their video testimonies. And we’re now gathering testimonies from genocides in Rwanda, Cambodia, Armenia and Nanking. Because we must never forget that the inconceivable doesn’t happen -- it happens frequently. Atrocities are happening right now. And so we wonder not just, ‘When will this hatred end?’ but, ‘How did it begin?’

Now, I don’t have to tell a crowd of Red Sox fans that we are wired for tribalism. But beyond rooting for the home team, tribalism has a much darker side. Instinctively and maybe even genetically, we divide the world into ‘us’ and ‘them.’ So the burning question must be: How do all of us together find the ‘we?’ How do we do that? There’s still so much work to be done, and sometimes I feel the work hasn’t even begun. And it’s not just anti-Semitism that’s surging -- Islamophobia’s on the rise, too. Because there’s no difference between anyone who is discriminated against, whether it’s the Muslims, or the Jews, or minorities on the border states, or the LGBT community -- it is all big one hate.

And to me, and, I think, to all of you, the only answer to more hate is more humanity. We gotta repair -- we have to replace fear with curiosity. ‘Us’ and ‘them’ -- we’ll find the ‘we’ by connecting with each other. And by believing that we’re members of the same tribe. And by feeling empathy for every soul -- even Yalies.

My son graduated from Yale, thank you …

But make sure this empathy isn’t just something that you feel. Make it something you act upon. That means vote. Peaceably protest. Speak up for those who can’t and speak up for those who may be shouting but aren’t being hard. Let your conscience shout as loud as it wants if you’re using it in the service of others.

And as an example of action in service of others, you need to look no further than this Hollywood-worthy backdrop of Memorial Church. Its south wall bears the names of Harvard alumni -- like President Faust has already mentioned -- students and faculty members, who gave their lives in World War II. All told, 697 souls, who once tread the ground where stand now, were lost. And at a service in this church in late 1945, Harvard President James Conant -- which President Faust also mentioned -- honored the brave and called upon the community to ‘reflect the radiance of their deeds.’

Seventy years later, this message still holds true. Because their sacrifice is not a debt that can be repaid in a single generation. It must be repaid with every generation. Just as we must never forget the atrocities, we must never forget those who fought for freedom. So as you leave this college and head out into the world, continue please to ‘reflect the radiance of their deeds,’ or as Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan would say, “Earn this.”

And please stay connected. Please never lose eye contact. This may not be a lesson you want to hear from a person who creates media, but we are spending more time looking down at our devices than we are looking in each other’s eyes. So, forgive me, but let’s start right now. Everyone here, please find someone’s eyes to look into. Students, and alumni and you too, President Faust, all of you, turn to someone you don’t know or don’t know very well. They may be standing behind you, or a couple of rows ahead. Just let your eyes meet. That’s it. That emotion you’re feeling is our shared humanity mixed in with a little social discomfort.

But, if you remember nothing else from today, I hope you remember this moment of human connection. And I hope you all had a lot of that over the past four years. Because today you start down the path of becoming the generation on which the next generation stands. And I’ve imagined many possible futures in my films, but you will determine the actual future. And I hope that it’s filled with justice and peace.

And finally, I wish you all a true, Hollywood-style happy ending. I hope you outrun the T. rex, catch the criminal and for your parents’ sake, maybe every now and then, just like E.T.: Go home. Thank you.

내가 대학을 졸업했던 때가 기억납니다. 쉽게 기억할 수 있습니다. 고작 14년 전이니까요. 여러분 중 37년만에 졸업하는 분이 몇 명이나 계시나요? 나는 여러분들과 마찬가지로 10대에 대학에 들어갔습니다. 하지만 2학년때 유니버설 스튜디오에서 나에게 꿈의 직장을 제안했기 때문에 학교를 그만두었습니다. 당시 부모님께는 내 영화 커리어가 잘 풀리지 않으면 학교로 돌아가겠다고 말씀드렸지요.

(그런데) 잘 풀렸습니다.

하지만 결국 저는 한 가지 큰 이유 때문에 다시 대학으로 돌아갔습니다. 사람들은 대부분 교육을 받으러 대학에 가고, 부모님 때문에 대학에 갑니다. 그러나 나는 내 아이들 때문에 갔습니다. 나는 일곱 자녀를 둔 아버지입니다. 나는 아이들에게 대학에 가는 게 중요하다고 계속 말했지만, 정작 나는 대학을 졸업하지 않았던 것이죠. 그래서 50대에 롱 비치의 캘리포니아 주립 대학교에 다시 등록하고 학위를 땄습니다.

한 가지 덧붙여야겠군요. ‘쥬라기 공원’을 만들었다는 이유로 저는 고생물학 수업을 듣지 않았지만, 학점을 인정받을 수 있었습니다. ‘쥬라기 공원’으로 3학점을 땄죠, 고맙게도.

과거에 내가 대학을 떠난 이유는 내가 하고 싶은 일이 뭔지 정확하게 알고 있었기 때문이었습니다. 여러분 중에도 그런 사람이 있겠지만, 아닌 사람들도 있을 겁니다. 아니면 예전엔 안다고 생각했는데, 지금은 그 선택에 의문을 갖고 있을 수도 있죠. 지금 앉아있는 여러분 중에는 코미디 작가가 아니라, 의사가 되고 싶다는 말을 부모님께 어떻게 할지 고민하는 사람도 있을 수 있어요.

여러분이 지금 선택하는 행동을 영화에서는 ‘캐릭터를 결정하는 순간’이라고 부릅니다. 지금 이 순간은 여러분이 아주 익숙한 순간입니다. 마치 ‘스타워즈: 깨어난 포스’에서 레이가 자신에게 포스가 있다는 걸 깨닫는 것과 같은 순간입니다. 혹은 인디애나 존스가 뱀들을 뛰어넘으며, 공포를 이기고 임무를 선택하는 장면처럼요.

2시간짜리 영화에서는 캐릭터를 결정하는 순간이 몇 번 안 나오지만, 실제 삶에서는 매일 그런 순간을 만납니다. 캐릭터를 결정하는 순간들이 길게 이어져 있는 것이 인생입니다. 내가 하고 싶은 일이 뭔지 18세에 정확히 알고 있었던 저는 운이 좋았습니다. 하지만 나는 내가 누구인지 몰랐습니다. 당연하죠. 우리 중 그 누구도 알 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 인생의 첫 25년 동안 우리는 내 스스로의 목소리가 아닌 남의 목소리를 듣는 훈련을 받기 때문입니다. 부모님과 교수들이 주는 지식과 정보로 우리의 머리를 채우고, 그 다음엔 고용주들과 멘터들이 그 자리를 차지하고 이 세상이 실제로 어떻게 돌아가는지 설명합니다.

그리고 이런 권위의 목소리들은 보통 이치에 맞습니다. 하지만 가끔은 의심이 우리의 머리와 마음속으로 기어들어 옵니다. ‘이건 내가 세상을 보는 방법이 아닌데’라고 생각할 때조차, 그냥 알겠다고 고개를 끄덕이며 시키는 대로 하는 게 더 쉽습니다. 나는 한동안 다른 이가 시키는 대로 내 캐릭터를 결정했습니다. 내가 내 시각을 억누르고 있었기 때문이었고, 해리 닐슨 노래 가사처럼 ‘모두 내게 말을 해서, 내 마음속의 메아리를 들을 수가 없었’기 때문이죠.

처음에는 내가 귀를 기울여야 했던 내면의 목소리가 거의 들을 수 없을 만큼 작았고, 거의 눈에 띄지 않았습니다. 고등학교때의 나와도 비슷했습니다. 하지만 나는 점점 더 주의를 많이 기울이기 시작했고, 그러자 직관의 효과가 나타났습니다.

직관은 양심과는 다르다는 걸 분명히 말하고 싶습니다. 직관과 양심은 함께 작용하지만, 다른 점이 있습니다. 양심은 ‘네가 해야 하는 일은 이거야’라고 소리치고, 직관은 ‘네가 할 수 있는 일은 이거야’라고 속삭입니다. 당신이 할 수 있는 일을 말해주는 목소리에 귀를 기울이세요. 그것만큼 당신의 캐릭터를 결정하는 것은 없습니다.

내가 직관을 접하고 나자, 내가 나의 직관이 되고 나자, 어떤 프로젝트들은 나를 끌어당겼고 어떤 프로젝트들에는 내가 등을 돌렸습니다.

1980년대까지 내 영화들은 대부분 이른바 ‘현실도피적’이었습니다. 나는 그 영화들을 폄하하는 게 아닙니다. 심지어 ‘1941’(1979)조차도요. 그리고 그 초기 영화들 중 상당수는 내가 굉장히 중요하게 여겼고 지금도 중시하는 가치들을 반영하고 있습니다. 하지만 나는 영화의 비누방울 안에 갇혀 있었습니다. 교육을 받다가 말았기 때문에, 내 세계관은 세상이 내게 가르쳐 줄 수 있는 것이 아니라 내가 머릿속에서 떠올릴 수 있는 것에 제한되어 있었습니다.

그러나 그때 나는 ‘컬러 퍼플’(1985)을 연출했습니다. 이 한 편의 영화가 내가 상상할 수 없으나 너무나 생생한 경험들에 눈을 뜨게 해주었습니다. 이 영화에는 깊은 고통과 더욱 깊은 진실들이 가득합니다. 셕 에버리가 ‘모든 것은 사랑받고 싶어한다’라고 말할 때처럼요. 나의 직관은 더 많은 사람들이 이 캐릭터들을 만나고 이 진실을 경험해야 한다고 말했습니다. 그래서 그 영화를 만드는 동안 나는 영화가 임무일 수도 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

나는 여러분이 모두 그런 임무의 느낌을 발견하길 바랍니다. 고통스러운 것에 등을 돌리지 마세요. 관찰하고 도전하십시오.

내 직업은 두 시간 동안 지속되는 세계를 만드는 겁니다. 여러분의 직업은 영원히 남는 세계를 만드는 겁니다. 여러분은 미래에 혁신을 하고, 동기 부여를 할 것이며, 지도자가 되고 남들을 돌볼 것입니다.

그리고 더 나은 미래를 만드는 방법은 과거를 공부하는 것입니다. ‘쥬라기 공원’의 원작 소설을 쓴 마이클 크라이튼은 하바드 대학교와 하바드 의대를 졸업했죠. 그는 자신이 가장 좋아하는 교수의 말을 즐겨 인용했습니다. 당신이 역사를 모르면 당신은 아무것도 모르는 것이다. 당신은 자신이 나무의 일부였다는 걸 모르는 나뭇잎이다. 그러니 역사 전공자들, 좋은 선택을 하셨습니다. 아주 훌륭해요…… 취업하기엔 별로겠지만 문화적으로는요.

그 외의 사람들은 노력을 좀 해야 합니다. 우리가 푹 빠져 지내는 소셜 미디어는 지금 여기에 대한 겁니다. 하지만 나는 내 가족 안에서 계속해서 싸우고 있어요. 아이들을 모두 과거를 보게 하도록, 어떤 일이 이제까지 일어났는지 보게 하기 위해서죠. 아이들이 자신이 누군지를 이해하는 것은 곧 부모가 누구였는지, 조부모가 누구였는지, 그리고 그들이 이 나라에 처음 이민 왔을 때 이 나라가 어땠는지를 이해하는 것이니까요. 우리 미국은 이민자들의 나라입니다. 적어도 지금은 그렇지요.

그래서 내게 있어 이 사실은 우리가 모두 자신의 이야기를 해야 한다는 걸 의미합니다. 우리에겐 들려줄 이야기가 정말 많아요. 할 수 있다면 부모님과 조부모님께 들려 드리고, 그들의 이야기를 들려 달라고 부탁하세요. 내가 내 아이들에게 약속했듯, 여러분께도 지루하지 않을 거라고 약속합니다.

그것이 내가 실제 사건에 기반한 영화를 자주 만드는 이유입니다. 나는 교훈을 늘어놓으려고 역사를 보는 게 아닙니다. 그건 그냥 덤이죠. 내가 과거를 보는 이유는 과거에는 최고의 이야기들이 가득하기 때문이에요. 영웅과 악당들은 문학적 구조에 불과한 게 아닙니다. 모든 역사의 중심에 있지요.

그리고, 이것이 자기 내면의 속삭임을 듣는 게 중요한 이유입니다. 에이브러햄 링컨과 오스카 쉰들러가 도덕적으로 올바른 결정을 내리게 해준 것이 바로 그것입니다. 당신을 결정하는 순간에, 편리함이나 형편 때문에 도덕이 흔들리게 하지 마십시오. 당신의 캐릭터를 고수하는 데는 많은 용기가 필요합니다. 그리고 용기를 가지려면 도움을 많이 받아야 할 것입니다.

당신이 운이 좋다면 나의 부모님 같은 부모님을 두고 있겠죠. 나는 어머니를 내 부적이라고 생각합니다. 그리고 내가 12살 때 아버지는 영화를 찍을 수 있는 카메라를 주셨습니다. 내가 이 세상을 이해할 수 있게 해준 도구였죠. 그 점에 대해 나는 아버지께 정말 감사함을 느낍니다. 그리고 아버지가 오늘 하버드에 오셔서 바로 저기에 앉아 계시다는 것에 감사드립니다.

내 아버지는 99세입니다. 와이드너 도서관보다 딱 한 살 어리신 거죠. 하지만 와이드너와는 달리 아버지는 외모를 전혀 꾸미지 않으셨습니다. 그리고 아빠, 아빠 뒤에 계신 숙녀분도 99세예요. 연설이 끝나고 나면 소개해 드릴게요. 좋죠?

하지만 가족이 없다 해도 대체할 수 있는 게 있습니다. ‘멋진 인생’이라는 영화를 기억하시나요? 그 영화가 끝날 무렵에 천사 클라렌스가 책에 이런 말을 쓰죠. “친구가 있는 사람은 실패한 사람이 아니다.” 나는 여러분이 여기 하버드에서 만든 우정을 지키길 바랍니다. 그리고 친구들 중에서 인생을 함께 나누고 싶은 사람을 발견하길 바랍니다. 여기 있는 사람들 중 좀 냉소적인 사람들도 있겠지만, 나는 대놓고 감상적이 되고 싶습니다. 나는 직관의 중요성을 이야기했고, 자신이 따라야 할 목소리 중에 직관보다 더 위대한 목소리는 없다고 말했습니다. 그건 여러분이 일생일대의 사랑을 만나기 전까지의 이야기입니다. 내가 케이트와 만나 결혼했을 때 그런 일이 일어났고, 그건 내 인생에서 가장 큰 캐릭터를 결정하는 순간이었습니다.

사랑, 지원, 용기, 직관. 이 모든 것들은 영웅인 여러분의 화살통에 들어 있습니다. 하지만 영웅에게는 한 가지가 더 필요합니다. 무찌를 악당이 필요하죠. 여러분은 운이 좋습니다. 이 세계엔 괴물들이 가득합니다. 그리고 인종차별, 동성애 혐오, 민족간의 증오, 계급간의 증오, 정치적 증오, 종교적 증오가 있지요.

어렸을 때 나는 유대인이라는 이유로 괴롭힘을 당했습니다. 불쾌했지만, 내 부모님과 조부모님이 당했던 것에 비하면 별 것 아니라고 느꼈습니다. 우리는 반유대주의가 사라지고 있다고 진심으로 믿었거든요. 그런데 우리는 틀렸습니다. 지난 2년 동안 2만 명 가까운 유대인이 더 나은 곳을 찾아 유럽을 떠났습니다. 그리고 올해에 오바마 대통령이 슬픈 진실을 말할 때 나는 이스라엘 대사관에 있었습니다. 오바마 대통령은 이렇게 말했죠. “우리는 전세계의 현실을 직시해야 하며, 반유대주의가 부상하고 있다. 우린 그것을 부정할 수 없다.”

그 현실을 직시하려는 내 자신의 욕구 때문에 나는 1994년 부터 쇼아 재단을 시작했습니다. 그리고 그이후 우리는 63개국에서 53,000명이 넘는 홀로코스트 생존자와 목격자들과 이야기를 나누고 영상을 남겼습니다. 그리고 이제 우리는 르완다, 캄보디아, 아르메니아, 난징의 대량 학살 에 대한 증언을 모으고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 상상조차 할 수 없는 일은 그냥도 아니고 자주 일어난다는 사실을 잊어서는 안되기 때문입니다. 잔혹 행위는 바로 지금도 일어나고 있습니다. 그러므로 우리는 ‘이 증오가 언제 끝이 날까?’라는 의문뿐 아니라 ‘이게 어떻게 시작된 거지?’라는 의문도 가져야 합니다.

레드삭스 팬들에게 우리가 부족 중심주의에 빠지기 쉽다는 걸 말할 필요는 없겠죠. 하지만 홈팀을 응원하는 것을 넘어서면, 부족 중심주의에는 훨씬 더 어두운 면이 있습니다. 본능적으로, 어쩌면 유전적으로 우리는 세상을 ‘우리’와 ‘그들’로 나눕니다. 그러므로 중요한 문제는 어떻게 하면 우리 모두가 ‘우리’를 찾을 수 있을까? 어떻게 하면 될까? 아직 해야 할 일이 많이 남았고, 때로는 나는 아직 시작조차 하지 않았다고 느껴집니다. 그리고 부상하고 있는 건 반유대주의만이 아닙니다. 이슬람 증오도 부상하고 있지요. 무슬림이든, 유대인이든, 남부의 소수자들이든, LGBT 커뮤니티든, 차별 받는 사람들 사이엔 아무 차이도 없기 때문입니다. 이 모든 건 하나의 거대한 증오입니다.

그리고 내게 있어, 그리고 여러분 모두에게 있어, 더 많은 증오에 대한 유일한 대답은 더 많은 인간성이라고 생각합니다. 우리는 고쳐야 합니다. 공포를 호기심으로 대체해야 합니다. ‘우리’와 ‘그들’. 우리는 서로와 연결되며 ‘우리’를 찾을 것입니다. 그리고 우리가 같은 부족의 일원이라고 믿으면서. 그리고 모든 사람들과 공감을 느끼면서. 심지어 예일 대학교 졸업생들과도 말이에요.

하지만 이런 공감을 느끼는 것만으로 그치지 않도록 하십시오. 이런 공감에 기반해 행동하십시오. 투표를 하라는 뜻입니다. 평화롭게 시위하십시오. 목소리를 높일 수 없는 사람들을 위해 목소리를 높이고, 귀 기울여 그 외침을 듣지 않는 사람들을 위해 목소리를 높이세요. 여러분의 양심을 남들을 위해 사용할 때, 양심이 원하는 대로 크게 외치게 하십시오.

그리고 남들을 위한 행동의 예는 헐리우드 영화에 나와도 될 정도로 멋진 이 메모리얼 교회만 보셔도 됩니다. 남쪽 벽에는 하버드 졸업생들의 이름이 새겨져 있죠. 파우스트 총장님이 아까 말씀하셨듯, 2차 세계대전에서 목숨을 바친 학생들과 교수들의 이름입니다. 총 697명이 내가 서 있는 이 곳을 걸었다가 세상을 떴습니다. 그리고 1945년 말 이 교회의 예배에서 제임스 코넌트 하바드 총장은, 이 역시 파우스트 학장님이 말씀하셨듯, 용감했던 그들을 기리며 ‘그들의 빛나는 행위를 깊이 생각할’ 것을 지역 사회에 요청했습니다.

70년이 지난 지금도 그 메시지는 옳습니다. 그들의 희생은 한 세대가 갚을 수 있는 빚이 아니기 때문입니다. 모든 세대가 갚아야 하는 빚입니다. 우리는 끔찍한 일들을 잊어서는 안 되는 것과 마찬가지로, 자유를 위해 싸운 사람들도 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 그러니 대학을 떠나 세상으로 들어가는 여러분들은 앞으로도 ‘그들의 빛나는 행위를 깊이 생각’해야 합니다. ‘라이언 일병 구하기’의 밀러 대위라면 “네 가치를 입증해”라고 말했겠죠.

그리고 타인과의 연결을 유지하십시오. 눈맞춤을 절대 잃어버리지 마세요. 미디어를 만드는 사람에게 듣고 싶은 교훈은 아닐지도 모르지만, 우리는 서로의 눈을 바라보는 시간보다 장비를 내려다 보는 시간이 더 길어요. 그러니 죄송하지만 지금 시작해 봅시다. 여기 계신 분들은 모두 누군가의 눈을 바라보시기 바랍니다. 학생들, 졸업생들, 그리고 파우스트 총장님도요. 모두들 모르는 사람이나 잘 모르는 사람을 찾으세요. 뒤에 있는 사람도 좋고, 몇 줄 앞의 사람도 좋습니다. 그냥 눈을 마주치세요. 바로 그겁니다. 여러분이 지금 느끼고 있는 감정이 약간의 사교적 불편함이 섞인, 우리가 공유하는 인간성입니다.

비록 어린시절 동안 제가 했던 천진난만한 생활이 평범하게 들릴지 모르겠지만 그렇게 사랑이 깃들고 평화스러웠던 시골 생활이 경제적으로 궁핍함에서 오는 여러 가지 힘들었던 일들을 극복할 수 있게 했습니다. 제 생활신조는 “밝은 면을 보라”인데 그것이 저를 항상 밝고 적극적으로 행동하게 자극을 줍니다.

Although what I had from an inartificial life during my childhood might sound ordinary to someone, such loving and peaceful country life has taught me how to deal with tough things that have happened to me over rather financially deprived life. The principle of my life; look on the bright side, which gives me motivations to keep me being positive and bright all the time.

하나의 작은 사상이 얼마나 사람들에게 그리고 그들의 행동에 영향을 미치는가를 알고 난 다음부터 저는 인적자원개발부에서 일하는 것을 항상 꿈꾸어 왔습니다. 저는 제 자신이 그것을 직접 경험 했습니다. 과거의 저는 매사에 불만이 많은 편이었습니다. 그러나 ‘성공하는 사람들의 일곱 가지 습관’을 읽고나서 제가 할 수 있는 것을 하기 위해 노력을 하였으며, 제 생활은 과거와는 다르게 변하게 되었습니다. 이러한 경험은 자연히 인적 자원 개발, 핵심 역량 개발, 리더십, 등의 관련 수업 수강으로 이어졌으며, 각 과목에서 우수한 성적을 받았습니다.

I have been always dreaming to be a HRD(Human Resource Development) person since I knew how one small thought can affect people and their behavior. I experienced it myself. I used to complain about everything in the past. However, after reading the book titled "Seven habits of highly effective people", I tried to do what I can do, and my life became a totally different one from the one it used to be. This experience led me to take related courses such as human resource development, leadership, core competency development, and so on, and I got good records.

When I was a high school student, I watched the program "Design, the power of change" on TV. I was deeply impressed with a story about design and a prospect of it. Before then, I had no idea about design and the effect of design to society or industry. I decided to study design more deeply upon this opportunity. I entered the OO University, majoring in Industrial design, where I received the scholarship.

고등학교 때 TV에서 “디자인, 그 변화의 힘”이라는 프로그램을 보았는데 디자인과 디자인의 전망에 관한 이야기에 깊은 감명을 받았습니다. 그 전에는 디자인과 그것이 사회 또는 산업에 미치는 영향에 대해서 전혀 몰랐습니다. 이 기회에 좀더 깊게 디자인을 공부해볼 것을 결심하고 OO대학교 산업디자인과에 들어갔으며 거기서 장학금을 받았습니다.
