Program Helps Students Express Themselves With Creative Writing

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish

826 is the name of a nonprofit organization that works to help students become better writers by thinking creatively.(826

826 is also the address of the first center where this literary arts program began in two thousand two.(826은 또한  이런 문예창작 프로그램이 2002년에 시작된 첫번째 센터의 주소입니다.)

Author Dave Eggars and educator Ninive Calegari started the program in California at 826 Valencia Street in San Francisco.(작가 Dave Eggars와 교육자 Ninive Calegari는 이 프로그램을 샌프란시스코의 826 Valencia Street 에서 시작했다.

It now serves thirty thousand students through writing and tutoring centers in eight American cities.(현재는 미국 8개 도시의 글쓰기 및 과외교습 센터를 통해 30000의 학생들에게 도움이 되고 있다.

At the front of 826 Valencia is a pirate supply store.(정면에는 해적용품을 파는 가게가 있다.)

Think of the kind of place where Captain Jack Sparrow might shop.(케리비안의 해적인 잭스패로우 선장이 들를법한 가게라고 생각하면된다.)

Leigh Lehman is the executive director.(Leigh Lehman

She says the idea of entering through a pirate store is meant to get students not to think of the place as a school or tutoring center.(그녀는 해적용품상점을 통하여 들어온다는 아이디어는 학생들이 학교 또는 교육센터라는 느낌을 주지 않기 위해서 라고 합니다.

During the day, teachers bring classes on field trips and volunteers help with writing projects.(낮동안 선생님들은 견학학습을 하게 하고, 자원봉사자들은 글쓰는 프로젝트를 돕는다.)

After school, students come for help with creative writing and their schoolwork.(방과 후에 학생들은 창조적인 글쓰기나 그들의 숙제에 대한 도움을 받기 위해서 온다.

The center is for public school students between six and eighteen years old.(이 센터는 6-8세 사이의 공립학교 학생들을 위해서 있습니다.)

Eight twenty-six Valencia is located in a mostly Latino neighborhood.(826 Valencia

Ms. Lehman says many of the children are from poor immigrant families.(Lehman

Each 826 center has a different theme -- from the pirate store in San Francisco to a store for "spies" in Chicago.(각각의 826센터는 다른 테마를 가지고 있는데 샌프란시스코에 해적상점으로부터 시카고의 "스파이"까지 다양하다.)

The national chief executive, Gerald Richards, says budget cuts in public schools mean less money for arts education.(전국 최고책임자 Gerald Richards는 공립학교 예산삭감은 예술교육에 돈이 줄어드는 것을 의미한다고 말합니다.)

And as that goes away, he says, so does the ability for students to use their imagination: "I think there is much more of a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.(그리고 그것(돈)이 없어지는것 처럼, 그가 말하길, 학생들이 상상력을 사용하는 능력도 없어집니다.)

There's a lot of a focus on testing and a lot of the teaching that's going on in schools is focusing on the test and passing the test rather than thinking about how do we get kids to think.(시험에 많은 촛점이 맞춰지고 학교에서 진행되는 많은 교수(수업)이 우리가 어떻게 아이들이 생각하게 할수 있는가라기 보다는 시험과 그 시험을 통과 하는데에 촛점이 있습니다.)

" Leigh Lehman says 826 builds confidence.(Leigh Lehman은 826기관이 자신감을 키운다고 합니다.)

Students can publish and sell their work at places like the pirate supply store and on the Internet.(학생들은 인터넷이나 해적용품점과 같은 장소에서 그들의 작품을 출판하거나 팔 수 있습니다.)

In twenty-ten, the programs across the country published nine hundred forty-four volumes of student writing.(2010

Ms. Lehman says students are proud when their writing gets published.(Lehman

One of the students in San Francisco, Sofia Marquez, says "I get to use my imagination -- that's why I like writing."
