Nurses spend their lives helping other people recover from injuries and illnesses.(간호사들은 다른 사람들이 부상이나 질병으로 부터 회복하도록 도우며 그들의 삶을 보내고 있습니다.)

Yet nurses suffer a surprising number of injuries and illnesses themselves because of their work.(그러나 간호사 자신들은 그들의 일 때문에 엄청난 수의 부상이나 질병을 겪고있습니다.)

In fact, the United States Department of Labor says nursing is the second leading profession for on-the-job injuries.(사실 미국 노동부는 간호직은 직장에서의 부상을 두번재로 많이 입는 직업이라고 한다.)

It ranks higher than construction work and law enforcement.(이것은 건설일 과 법집행직 보다도더 높은 순위이다.)

Only freight and stock movers report higher injury rates.(오직 화물 및 상품 운반자들의 상해율만이 이보다 더 높은 것으로 전해진다.)

Nurses and other health care workers do a lot of heavy lifting on the job.(간호사들과 다른 보건직 종사자들은 근무 중 무거운 것들을 많이 들어올린다.)

Lifting and moving patients improperly leads to sprains, strains and muscle tears -- leading causes of injuries to nurses.(환자들을 부적절하게 들어올리거나 옮기는 것은 간호사들에게 발생하는 주요 상해 원인인 염좌, 좌상 및 근육파열로 이끈다.)

Gretchen Gregory is an instructor at the Sinclair School of Nursing on the Columbia campus of the University of Missouri.(그레첸 그레고리씨는 미주리 대학 콜롬비아 캠퍼스에 있는 싱클레어 간호대학 강사이다.)

She says back problems are the greatest threat that nurses face when they lift or move patients.

Gretchen Gregory: "You're talking about people that have handicaps or limited mobility, that need much assistance. And we have untrained people to do that assisting and that puts them at risk for hurting their backs."

Ms. Gregory leads a new training room where nurses can learn to keep themselves and their patients safe.(그레고리 씨는 간호사들이 자기 자신과 환자들을 안전하게 지키는것을 배울수 있는 새 훈련실을 이끌고 있다.)

She says most nurses lack training in how to lift patients.(그녀가 말하기를 대부분의 간호사들은 환자를 들어올리는 방법의 훈련이 부족합니다.)

Gretchen Gregory: "That's not something that we teach in school, but that's when falls happen and that's when nurses get hurt.(“그것은 우리가 학교에서 가르치는 것이 아니지만 그것이(환자들어올리는것) 환자들이 떨어지거나 간호사들이 다치는 일이 발생할 때입니다.”)

"The safe practices room has special training equipment, including a life-size mannequin doll.(안전 실습실에는 실물 크기의 마네킹 인형을 포함하여 특수한 훈련 장비들이 갖춰져 있습니다.)

This "patient" can be filled with water and made to weigh as much as one hundred fifty-nine kilograms.

Ms. Gregory says most American hospitals have lifting equipment to help nurses move patients.( 그레고리씨가 말하기를 대부분의 미국 병원들은 간호사가 환자를 이동시키는것은 돕는 리프팅장비를 갖추고 있다고 합니다.)

But she says the equipment is often pushed back in a corner somewhere -- unused and forgotten.(그러나 그녀에 따르면 그 장비는 종종 구석어딘가에 사용되지 않고 잊혀진채 밀쳐져 있습니다.)

She says the safe practices room teaches the importance of using the tools and skills available.(그녀는 안전실습실은 그 도구와 기술의 이용가능함의 중요성을 가르쳐준다고 말합니다.)

The training room also seeks to improve communication skills and other practices in a setting designed to copy a busy hospital or clinic.

As Gretchen Gregory puts it: "If we provide an environment where everything's nice and quiet and they can give their medications or they can communicate to a physician when there's nothing going on, that's not really a real-life setting. They have to be able to do it with some distraction."(그레고리씨가 말하길 “모든 것이 좋고 조용한 환경을 제공하고, 아무런 일도 발생하지 않는 가운데 간호사들이 치료를 하고 의사와 의사소통할 수 있다면, 그것은 그리 실제적인 환경이 아닙니다. 간호사들은 어느 정도의 방해 요소들이 있어도 그러한 것을 할 수 있어야 해요.” )

*put:(특정한 방식으로) 표현[말]하다, (말・글로) 옮기다.

An unidentified donor gave three hundred thousand dollars to build the new room. The University of Missouri describes it as one of the first of its kind at a nursing school in the United States.(한 익명의 기부자가 이 새로운 실습실을 짓도록 30만 달러를 기부했다.

But in Africa the rate was less than seventy percent in cities, and just one-fourth of the people in rural areas. There are many efforts to find low-cost ways to light homes. One idea ...
