Americans gave about two hundred ninety billion dollars to charity last year.(미국인들은 대략 2천 9백억 달러를 자선단체에 기부했다.) That was ten billion dollars more than the amount of charitable giving in two thousand nine.(그것은 2009년의 자선기부보다 10억달러가 많다.)

The estimates are from the Giving USA Foundation and its research partner, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.( 그 추정치는 기빙 유에스에이 재단과 그 재단의 연구파트너인 인디애나대학 자선센터에서 나왔습니다.)

Charities are nonprofit organizations that raise money to provide social services or other programs.(자선 단체들은 사회적서비스나 다른 프로그램을 제공하기위해 돈을 모으는 비영리 기관입니다.)

Giving USA has been reporting on charitable donations since nineteen fifty-six.(기빙 유에스에이는 1956년 이후로 자선기부를 보고하고 있습니다.)

The group estimates that about seventy-five million households gave to at least one charitable organization in the United States last year.(이 그룹은 지난해 미국에서 약 7천 5백만 가구가 적어도 한 자선단체에 기부했다고 추정하고 있습니다.)

A household is one or more people living in a home.(한 가정은 한 집에 한 명 혹은 그 이상이 살고 있는 것을 말한다.) The largest share of charitable giving goes to religious groups.(자선기부의 가장 큰 몫은 종교단체에 가고 있습니다.)

Giving USA says they received thirty-five percent of all donations in twenty-ten.(기빙 유에스에이는 2010년 모든 기부의 35%를 받았다고 말합니다.) Some people give a percentage of their pay to religious organizations.(몇몇 사람들은 그들 급여의 일정 퍼센트를 종교기관에 낸다.)

Schools and other education-related organizations were second on the list.(학교와 다른 교육관련기관들은 2위를 차지했다.) They received an estimated fourteen percent of all charitable giving last year.(그들은 지난해 모든 자선기부의 약 14%를 받았다.)

The federal tax agency, the Internal Revenue Service, recognizes donations to official charities.(연방세금기관인 IRS는 공식적인 자선단체에 기부를 인정하고 있다.) Those who give to charity may be able to get tax breaks and reduce the amount of taxes they owe.(기부를 하는 사람들은 세금 감면을 받고, 그들이 내야 하는 세금의 양을 줄일 수 있다.) People who give to charity may want to know how their donations are being spent.(기부를 하는 사람들은 그들의 기부금이 어떻게 쓰여지고 있는지 알고 싶어할 수 있다.)

Organizations like Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy look at how charities spend the money they receive.(채러티 네비게이터와 미국자선연구소 같은 기관들은 자선단체들이 받은 돈을 어떻게 쓰는 지 조사한다.)

Their reports and ratings offer a measure of how effectively the charities use their money.그들의 보고서와 등급은 자선단체들이 얼마나 효율적으로 그들의 돈을 사용했는가에 대한 척도를 제공한다.)

For example, donors can learn how much a group spends on services, compared to how much it spends on itself in administrative costs.(예를 들면, 기부자들은 한 그룹이 그 자체의 행정비용에 얼마나 쓰는 지를 비교해서 얼마나 많은 돈을 서비스에 지불했는 지 알 수 있다.)

Charity Navigator recently asked donors and charities to answer questions about year-end giving trends this year.(채러티 네비게이터는 올해 연말기부경향에 대한 질문에 답하라고 기부자와 자선단체에 요구했습니다.)

More than five hundred donors and one hundred charities completed the questionnaire.(500명 이상의 기부자와 100개 이상의 자선단체는 설문지를 작성했다.) On average, these charities said they received forty-one percent of all their donations in the last few weeks of the year.(평균적으로, 이러한 자선단체는 올 지난 몇 주 동안에 모든 자선의 41%를 받았다고 말했습니다.)

Charity Navigator also asked donors about the kinds of charities they would likely support this holiday season.(채러티 네비게이터는 또한 기부자들에게 이번 휴가시즌에 그들이 기부할 자선단체의 종류에 대해 물었습니다.) Human services rated at the top of the list. Arts, culture and humanities rated at the bottom. 인간에 대한 서비스가 최고였습니다. 예술, 문화, 인문학은 가장 밑에 있었습니다.)

But in Africa the rate was less than seventy percent in cities, and just one-fourth of the people in rural areas. There are many efforts to find low-cost ways to light homes. One idea ...
