Semicolon(;), Colon(:), Dash(-)
(1) Semicolon : comma를 쓰기에는 의미의 차이가 많이나고, period를 써서 분리시키
기에는 상호관련이 있는 경우에 사용된다.
① 각 절이 등위접속사 없이 연결될 때.(이 때 semicolon은 and, but, or, nor, for 의 의미)
· He was bred to no profession; he never married; he lived alone.
② 등위접속사로 연결되더라도 좀 더 크게 분리하기 위해서 사용될 때.
③ therefore, however, hence, accordingly, then, still, moreover, nevertheless, furthermore 등으로 접속되는 등위절은 그 앞에 semicolon을 쓴다.(종종 생략된다)
· No man will take advice, but every man will take money;therefore money
is better than advice.
· Juliet awoke and saw Romeo dead;then she killed herself.
(2) Colon : 분리의 정도가 semicolon 보다는 크고 period 보다는 작다. 그러나 semicolon과 구별없이 쓰이는 경우가 많다.
① 앞 말에 대한 내용을 구체적으로 열거할 때.
· There are three causes: poverty, injustice, and indolence.
② 앞 말에 대한 보충 또는 부연설명을 의미할 때.
· Study to acquire a habit of thinking: no study is more important.
③ 긴 말의 인용이 연결될 때.
· Clearing his throat, he began as follows: “We look before and after, we
see, through the ..... ”
(3) Dash
① 앞 말 또는 그와 같은 의미를 되풀이해서 강조하거나 수식할 때.
· Oh, yes, he was hungry--hungry as a church mouse.
· Be a virtuous--be religious--be a good man.
② 앞 말을 전부 종합해서 다시 말할 때.
· Health, friends, position,--all are gone.
③ 문장 중간에 다른 생각이나 말을 끼워 넣을 때.(괄호의 역할을 한다)
· I dressed--you may not believe this, but it is true--in ten minutes.
· If you should see him--you might meet him on the train--give him my
message.
④ 동격
· He tried to save the little girl from drowning at the cost of his own
life--a heroic act.(앞문장 전체와 동격)
