A Friend in Need is A Friend Indeed
따듯한 포장마차에서 나와 차디찬 밤 공기를 맞으니 기철의 몸이 움찔거렸다 Walking out into the freezing night air from a warm cart bar was a shock to the system. 기철은 포장마차를 나오기 싫었지만 한잔 더 마실 돈이 없었다 he could not afford another drink. 호주머니에 남은 거라곤 집으로 갈 버스요금 뿐, 꽁꽁 언 포장도로 위로 호주머니에 손을 찔러 넣고는 with his hands in his pockets 조심스럽게 길을 재촉했다. 바람이 살을 에는 듯했다 the wind was cutting into him. 기철은 내일 출근할 생각에 기분이 우울해졌다 felt depressed at the thought of going to work tomorrow.
방은 어둡고 차가웠다. 재빠르게 전기난로를 켰다 quickly turned on his small electric heater. 기철은 난로위로 몸을 구부리며 몸을 떨었다 hunched himself over the heater and shivered. 방 작은 새시 창을 누군가 두드리는 소리가 들렸다 heard a tap at the small sash window. 커다란 둥근 눈이 기철을 바라보고 있었다. 남루한 얼룩 고양이 한 마리가 창턱에 앉아 있었다 sitting on the window sill was a ragged black and white cat. 새들어 사는 방에 동물을 들여서는 안 되었지만 기철은 차가운 바람 속에 떨고 있는 고양이가 불쌍했다 felt so sorry for the cat out in the bitter wind. 기철이 창문을 열자 고양이가 들어왔다. 긴 꼬리를 기철의 손에 감더니 살금살금 기철의 무릎위로 올랐다. 기철은 고양이를 쓰다듬었다 stroked the cat. 불빛에 털이 빛났다. 고양이는 가르랑거리기 시작했다 it began to purr loudly.
냉장고 안은 아침에 먹을 빵과 우유 말고는 텅 비어 있었다 His fridge was almost empty except for a little milk and bread. 기철은 접시에다 우유를 조금 따르고는 poured some into a saucer 난로 옆에 내려 놓았다. 고양이는 마지막 한 방울까지 핥아 먹었다 The cat licked up every drop. 기철은 빵 조각도 조금 떼 주고는 먹는 것을 지켜 봤다.

“널 데리고 있고 싶지만 아침이 되면 넌 가야 해, 불쌍한 친구 I'd like to keep you but you can stay until morning, poor thing.”

기철은 이 매정한 세상에서 살아남으려는 고양이에게 묘한 동질감을 느꼈다 felt a sort of strange kinship with the cat struggling for existence in a heartless world. 고양이를 쓰다듬으면 편안하고 기분이 좋았다.

아침이 오자 기철은 흐릿하게 잠이 들깬 눈으로 bleary eyed and half asleep 고양이를 내보내고는 일터로 무거운 몸을 옮겼다. 기철은 내심 고양이가 오늘 밤도 자기를 찾아 와 주기를 바라고 있었다 hoping that it may pay him another visit in the evening.....
