   Tomorrow is New Year's Day.

This year is the year of the mouse.

I wish everybody a happy New Year!

We celebrate New Year's Day by the lunar calendar.

We had three day holidays for New Year's Day this year.

It took quite a long time to reach my grandparents' house.

Almost every road was jammed up with the cars of those who were going to their hometown.

¶ almost : 거의 / be jammed up : (교통이) 꽉 막히다

On New Year's Day, we got up early in the morning and put on new clothes.

   We performed ancestral memorial ceremony.

On the morning of New Year's Day, we made bows to the elder members of the family.

¶ make bows to ~ : ~에게 절하다

I wished my grandfather's best health and longevity.

They gave each of us a piece of good advice.

After the bows, they gave us some money.

I got a total of 70,000 won this year.

¶ a total of ~ : ~의 총액

I was very happy to have such a large sum of money for the first time.

¶ a large sum of ~ : 많은 금액의 ~ / for the first time : 처음으로

I ate a bowl of rice cake soup and gained one year of age.

On the New Year's Day, I made calls on our relatives to salute.

¶ make calls on ~ : ~를 방문하다 / salute : 인사하다

My family and relatives got together and played Yut.

I made several resolutions for this new year.

I hope all my resolutions will come true this year.

¶ come true : 실현되다

Korean New Year, commonly known as Seollal, is the first day of the lunar calendar. It is the most important of the traditional Korean holidays. It consists of a period of celebrations, starting on New Year's Day. Koreans also celebrate solar New Year's Day on January 1 each year, following the Gregorian Calendar. The Korean New Year holiday lasts three days, and is considered a more important holiday than the solar New Year's Day.[Source: Wikipedia]

Korean New Year is typically a family holiday. The three-day holiday is used by many to return to their hometowns to visit their parents and other relatives where they perform an ancestral ritual. Many Koreans dress up in colorful traditional Korean clothing called hanbok. But nowadays, small families tend to become less formal and wear other formal clothing instead of hanbok.
