(1) 강조될 수 있는 요소
주어, 목적어, 일부전치사구, 일부전치사의 목적어, 이유, 장소, 시간 등을 나타내는 부사는 강조될 수 있다.

John succeeded his father to the presidency last year.

(2) it ... that 강조 용법으로 강조될 수 없는 요소
it that용법으로 ①주격 보어 ②술어동사 ③문장/양태 부사 ④간접목적어 등은 강조 될 수 없다.
• I felt very happy.
→ It was very happy that I felt. (×)
• He treated me kindly.
→ It was kindly that he treated me. (×)
→ He treated me very kindly. (○)
(3) it ... that 강조 용법의 유의 사항
① 목적격 보어는 강조된다.
• We've painted the kitchen dark green.
→ It's dark green that we've painted the kitchen.
② 의문사는 강조된다.
• What was it that they blamed you for?
③ 구, 절 등에 관계없이 강조된다.
• It's not what they think of you, but what you think of them that counts.
④ that은 성격상 관계대명사이며 따라서 사람/사물이 강조될 때 각각 who나 which가 쓰일 수 있다.
• It was my mother who(that) threw an egg at the man.
• It was the very facts which(that) convinced me.
⑤ that 대신 'whose + 명사', '전치사 + whom/ which'도 사용된다.
• It's the student whose name and address I forgot.
• It was John to whom I gave the book.
⑥ that을 대신할 수 없을 때
부사(구/절)를 강조할 때 which, where, why, how 등을 that대신 사용하지 못한다. 또 목적격 관계대명사 whom도 that을 대신할 수 없다.
• It was yesterday which I was noticed of it. (×) (→ that)
⑦ that을 생략할 수 있다. (구어체)
• It's that watch (that) I said I would let you have.
• It was because he was ill (that) we decided to return.
⑧ 강조되는 내용은 신정보, that節 내용은 구정보가 된다.
강조 요소는 강하게 발음한다.
It 대신 that, those를 사용한 것도 일종의 강조이다.
의문문, 감탄문의 형식으로 쓰이는 it that 용법도 있다.
• It was Jóhn that broke the window. ((넌 몰랐지만) 창문을 깬 사람은 바로 존이었어.)

가장 단순하게 생각할 수 있는 것은 강조구문은 빼도 말이 된다는 것입니다.
