A Hey, George! What are you doing here?
You never come to the library and besides it's
   vacation time!
B You're right. I hardly ever come. I'm going to
check out a book.
   What are you studying here these days? TOIEC?
I already got a 900 last month.

A 야, 조지! 여기서 뭐해?
너 원래 도서관 안 다니잖아. 게다가, 지금은 방학인데!
B 그래. 난 도서관에 거의 안 오지. 그냥, 책 한 권 대출
   하려고.
넌 요즘 여기서 무슨 공부해? 토익?
난 지난 달에 벌써 900점 받았는데.

'check out' 하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 것이 '호텔에서의 체크아웃' 입니다.

하지만, 이를 제외하고도 '퇴근하다' 로도 쓰이고, 오늘 대화에서처럼 도서관에서 '책을 대출하다' 의 개념으로도 사용됩니다.

친구가 도서관에서 우연히 마주친 조지에게 좀 비아냥거리고 있는 것 같은데요.

"You never come to the library." 이 말에, 조지가 "I hardly ever come." 이라고 받아치는군요.

'hardly + 동사' 는 '거의 ~하지 않는다' 라는 뜻을 나타내는 유용한 표현입니다.

참고로, 도서 대여와 관련된 표현을 알려 드릴게요. "I should return these books by today.(오늘까지 이 책들을 반납해야 해요.)",

"What is the overdue charge?(연체료가 얼마에요?)" 등이 있습니다.
