Selene        Oh, look, there's a rabbit. 오, 봐요, 토끼에요.

Selene        He's so cute. ..I visited this as a young teenager.

                 I think it left a bigger impression on me at that time

                 than any of the museums we went to.

Jesse          Yeah? It’s tiny. 네?  작네요.

Selene        I know. There was this little old man that talked to us.

                 He was the grounds keeper. He explained that most of the people are buried here

                 that washed up on the bank of the Danube.

                알아요. 나랑 얘길 나누던 할아버지 한 분 있었죠. 묘지 관리인이셨어요.

                여기 묻힌 대부분의 사람들은 다뉴브 강둑으로 떠내려 왔다더군요.

*여기서 지시어 this를 쓴 건 바로 눈 앞에 있어서가 아니라 화자의 마음속에 존재하는 little old man을 상대방과의 공동 관심사로 끌어 들이려는 심리를 반영한다.

/I was walking along the street when this girl came up to me….

지시어 this는 시간적으로 가까운 미래를, 심리적으로 ‘애정’, ‘자랑’ 등 긍정적 감정을 반영하고, 반면 that은 가까운 과거를, 그리고 ‘경멸’, ‘혐오’ 등 부정적 감정을 반영함.

/We’re going to the opera tonight. This will be our first outing for months.

/We went to the opera last night. That was our first outing for months.

/This firm of ours is becoming one of the biggest in the country.

/Damn. There’s that inspector again.

this /that은 앞에 나온 절 또는 문장내용을 가리킨다.

I heard the meeting has been cancelled. If this/that is so, I’ll protest strongly.

하지만 뒤에 나오는 내용을 의미할 경우에는 this 만 가능.

Look at this! They’ve cancelled the meeting.

Jesse          How old are these? 얼마나 오래 됐죠?

Selene        Around the beginning of the century or so.

                 It's called the cemetery of the no-name

                 because they often didn't know who these people were.

                 Maybe a first name, that's all.

                 20세기 초반에 꾸며졌어요. 이름 없는 사람들의 묘지래요.

                 여기 이 사람들이 누군지 몰랐으니까요. 아마 이름 정도만, 그게 다죠 뭐.

Jesse          Why were all the bodies washing up?

                 왜 그 모든 시체들이 떠내려 온 걸까요?

Selene        I think some were from accidents, on boats and things like that,

                 but most of them were suicides that jumped in the river.

                 I always liked the idea of all those unknown people lost in the world.

                 When I was a little girl, I always thought that if none of your family

                 or friends knew you were dead, then it’s like not really being dead.

                 People can invent the best and the worst for you. Ah, here she is, I think.

                 Yeah, this is, this is the one I remember the most. She was only 13 when she died.

                 That meant something to me, you know, I was that age when I first saw this.

                 Hmm. Now, I'm 10 years older, and she's still, 13, I guess. That's funny.

                 내 생각엔 어떤 사람들은 보트 사고 같은 걸로 떠내려 왔고, 하지만 대부분 강물에 뛰어 들어 자살한 사람들이에요. 난 늘 이 세상에서 길 잃은 이름 모를 사람들에 대한 생각이 좋았어요. 어렸을 때, 사람이 죽은 사실을 가족이나 친구가 모르면, 그건 진짜 죽은 게 아니라고 생각했어요. 사람들은 최상의 것과 최악의 것을 다 꾸며내죠. 아 여기 있네. 이게 가장 기억에 남아 있어요. 사망 당시 겨우 13살이었어요. 그게 나한텐 큰 의미로 다가왔죠. 처음 이 묘지를 봤을 때 내 나이도 그 13 살이었어요. 난 이제 열 살이나 더 먹었는데, 이 앤 아직 13 살이에요. 재밌어요.
