Some people's ears produce wax like busy little bees.(어떤 사람들의 귀는 분주한 작은 벌들처럼 귀지를 만들어낸다.)  This can be a problem even though earwax appears to serve an important purpose.(귀지가 중요한 역할을 하는듯 하지만 이것은 문제가 될 수 있다.)

It protects and cleans the ear.(귀지는 귀를 보호하고 깨끗케 해준다.) It traps dirt and other matter, and it keeps insects out.(귀지는 먼지나 다른 물질을 가두어 주며, 곤충들이 들어오지 못하게 막아준다. )

Doctors think earwax might also help protect against infections.(의사들은 또한 귀지가 감염으로부터 보호받도록 도와줄지도 모른다고 생각한다.)

And the waxy oil keeps ears from getting too dry.(귀지 기름은 귀가 너무 건조해지지 않도록 해준다.)

So earwax is good. It even has a medical name: cerumen.(그래서 귀지는 좋은 것이다.

And there are two kinds. Most people of European or African ancestry have the "wet" kind: thick and sticky.(그리고 이에는 두 가지 종류가 있다.

East Asians commonly have "dry" earwax. But you can have too much of a good thing.

The glands in the ear canal that produce the wax make too much in some people.(귓구멍(귀도관)에서 귀지를 만들어내는 분비샘들은 어떤 사람들에게는 너무 많이 많들어 낸다.)

Earwax is normally expelled; it falls out of the ear or gets washed away.(귀지는 일반적으로는 배출된다.

But extra wax can harden and form a blockage that interferes with sound waves and reduces hearing.(그러나 남게 되는 귀지들은 굳어져서 음파를 방해하고 청력을 떨어뜨리는 장애물을 형성할 수 있다.)

People can also cause a blockage when they try to clean out their ears, but only push the wax deeper inside.(사람들 스스로 자신의 귀를 청소 할 때 오히려 귀지를 더 깊이 멀어넣어버림으로써 장애물을 만들 수도 있다.)

Earwax removal is sometimes necessary.(귀지제거는 때때로 필요하다.)

But you have to use a safe method or you could do a lot of damage.(그러나 여러분은 안전한 방법을 사용해야만 한다.

Experts at the National Institutes of Health, NIH, suggest some ways to treat excessive earwax yourself.(미국국립보건원(NIH)의 전문가들은 과도한 귀지들을 스스로 처리할 수 있는 몇가지 방법들을 제안한다.)

The wax can be softened with mineral oil, glycerin or ear drops. Hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide may also help.

Another way to remove wax is known as irrigation.(귀지를 제거하는 또 다른 방법은 관주법(세척)으로 알려져 있는 방법이다.)

With the head upright, take hold of the outer part of the ear.(머리를 수직으로 세운 채 귀의 바깥 부분을 쥐어라.)

Gently pull upward to straighten the ear canal.(귓구멍이 펴지도록 부드럽게 위로 당기시오.)

Use a syringe device to gently direct water against the wall of the ear canal.(주사기 장치를 이용해서 귓구멍의 벽에  직접 부드럽게 물을 쏘아라.)

Then turn the head to the side to let the water out.(그리고 나서 물이 빠져나오도록 머리를 옆으로 돌려라.)

The experts at NIH say you may have to repeat this process a few times.(미국국립보건원 전문가들은 여러분이 이러한 절차를 몇차례 반복해야 할 수도 있다고 말한다.)

Use water that is body temperature.(체온 정도의 물을 이용하라.)

If the water is cooler or warmer, it could make you feel dizzy.(물이 차갑거나 따듯하면, 그것으로 인해 현기증이 날 수도 있다.)

Never try irrigation if the eardrum is broken.(고막을 다쳤을 때는 절대 이러한 세척법을 시도하지 말라.)

It could lead to infection and other problems.(그것은 감염을 비롯한 다른 문제를 유발할 수도 있다.)

After the earwax is gone, gently dry the ear.(귀지가 제거된 후에 귀를 부드럽게 말려라.

But if irrigation fails, the best thing to do is to go to a health care provider for professional assistance.(그러나 세척법이 제대로 통하지 않을 때는 의료인에게 가서 전문적인 도움을 받는 것이 상책이다.

You should never put a cotton swab or other object into the ear canal.(귓구멍 속에 면봉이나 다른 물체를 넣어서는 절대로 안 된다.

But you can use a swab or cloth to clean the outer part of the ear.(그러나 귀의 외부를 깨끗케 하고자 할 경우에는 면봉이나 천을 이용할 수 있다.

Experts agree with the old saying that you should never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.(전문가들은 귓 속에 팔꿈치보다 작은 것을 절대로 넣지 말라는 옛말에 동의한다.)

This kind of plant is called an annual. Think of an "annual report," a report published just once a year. You can probably guess the next question. What do we call a plant that produces new growth year after year? Plants that keep growing back are called perennials. So a perennial is the opposite of an annual. Perenn...
