A three-year effort in developing countries will seek to put twenty-five million children in school for the first time.(개발도상국 3년의 노력이 2500만명의 아이들을 처음으로 학교에 보내게 할 것으로 보인다.) Another goal of the Global Partnership for Education is to train six hundred thousand teachers.

The partnership recently awarded nearly one hundred seventy million dollars in grants to seven countries.(이 파트너쉽은 최근 7개국가에 보조금으로 거의 1억 7천만 달러를 최근에 지급했습니다.)

These were the first grants since the organization changed its name a few months ago from the Fast Track Initiative.(이는 이 단체가 몇개월전 "패스트 트랙 이니셔티브"라는 이름에서 단체이름을 변경한 이후로 처음 보조금입니다.)

Fast Track was founded in two thousand two.(패스트 트랙은 2002년도에 설립되었습니다.)

* grant: 보조금

Charles Tapp is an adviser to the partnership.(찰스 탭씨는 이 파트너쉽의 조언가입니다.) He says, "There had been a lot of evolution of the old Fast Track Initiative, which was essentially something of a donors club, I think.(그가 말하기를 본래 상당한 기부자 클럽이었던 옛 "패스트 트랙 이니셔티브"에서 많은 발전이 있어왔습니다)" And what was clear from our perspective [was] that we were not just a funding entity.(우리의 관점에서 명확했던 것은 우리가 단지 돈 줄이 아니라는 것이었죠. )

This was indeed a partnership.(이 단체는 실로 파트너쉽이라 할만했습니다.”)

" The partnership includes almost fifty developing countries, as well as donors, civil society groups and teacher organizations.(이 파트너쉽은 기부자들과 시민 사회 그룹들, 교사 단체들 뿐만 아니라 거의 50개에 달하는 개발도상국들을 포함하고 있다.)

It also includes private companies, international development banks and United Nations agencies.

The latest grants were awarded to Afghanistan, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Moldova, Mongolia and Timor-Leste.(가장 최근의 보조금은 아프가니스탄, 아이보리 코스트(코트디부아르의 구칭), 기니비사우, 말리, 몰도바, 몽골 및 동티모르에 지급되었다.

Mr. Tapp says the grant to Afghanistan is worth almost fifty-six million dollars.

He says the Afghan government "has made a very strong commitment of allocating as much of its own resources as it can for education.(그에 따르면 “아프가니스탄 정부는 교육을 위해 자국의 자원들을 최대한 할당하겠다는 매우 강한 약속을 해왔습니다.)

Historically, Afghanistan has had some very, very well-educated people.(역사적으로 아프가니스탄에는 매우 교육을 잘 받은 사람들이 있었습니다.)

[They] tend to come from sort of the urban centers.(그들은 다소간 도심지 등에서 온 출신인 경향이 있습니다.) But obviously given the recent troubles and problems in Afghanistan over the last twenty years or so, the quality of education has plummeted."(그러나 최근 20여년의 기간 동안 아프가니스탄에서 발생된 어려움들과 문제들을 고려해 볼 때, 교육의 질은 땅 바닥에 곤두박질쳐 왔습니다..”)

* commitment: 약속, 전념, 헌신 sort of:<일종의> <다소간> <이를테면> given:…

Mr. Tapp says Ivory Coast received forty-one million dollars to help in its recovery from the recent political violence there.(탭 씨에 따르면 아이보리 코스트는 최근 정치적 폭력사태로부터의 회복을 돕기 위해 4,100백만 달러를 지원받았다고 합니다.)

One goal is to get school feeding programs in place.(학교 급식 프로그램이 자리잡도록 하는 것입니다.) Mr. Tapp says more countries are now looking for help from the partnership.(탭씨가 말하길 현재 더 많은 국가들이 이 파트너쉽으로부터 도움을 구하고 있습니다.)

 "Unfortunately, given the current global financial climate and the fact that there are still sixty-seven million kids out of school around the world, demand for our financing seems to be increasing rather than decreasing."

But many donor countries are reducing their spending.(그러나 많은 기부 국가들이 지출을 줄이고 있다.)

So he says the partnership must show them that their money is being well-spent.(그러므로 탭 씨는 이 파트너쉽이 그러보조금들이 잘 쓰이고 있는지를 보여줘야 한다고 말한다.)

He says, "It's very clear that in the Global Partnership partner countries that you're seeing more kids getting to school for longer and for a better education. " (그가 말하길 "글로벌 교육 파트너쉽의 파트너 국가에서 더 많은 아이들이 더 오래, 더 좋은 교육을 받으러 학교에 다니는 것을 보고 있는 것은 분명합니다.” )

And as education improves, he says, so does the health of a country.(그리고 교육이 향상됨에 따라 국가의 건전성도 좋아질 것이다.)

Today we have a vocabulary quiz. We start with two questions about terms for plants. OK, first question: What is the name for a plant that lives only one year or one growing season? This kind of plant is called an annual. Think of an "annual report," a report published just once a year. You can probably guess the next question. What do we call a plant that produces new growth year after year? Plants that keep growing back are called perennials. So a perennial is the opposite of an annual. Perenn...
