의사/유사관계대명사 As/Than/But

1. As가 접속사 또는 전치사로 쓰일 때

   Do it as I do it                                     양태

   He came up as I was speaking                         시간

   As it was getting dark, we soon turned back          이유

   Woman as she was, she was brave                      양보

   =Though she was a woman, ----

   He treats me as a child                             전치사

접속사로 쓰일때는 관계대명사와는 달리 접속사 다음에 생략된 요소가 없이 완전한 문장이 오지요.*^^*

2. As가 의사(유사) 관계대명사로 쓰일 때

   1. Don't trust such friends as praise you to your face.

   as 다음에 주어가 없지요. 그래서 접속사는 아니구요. 주격관계대명사랑 모양이 똑같지요. 선행사로 friends가 주어역할을 하고요. 관계대명사랑 유사한 모양과 역할을 해서 유사 관계 대명사라고 합니다.
  
   2. Don't read such books as you cannot understand

   as 다음에 understand의 목적어가 없습니다. "이해할 수 있는데 뭘?" 이해하는 대상이 생략되었지요. 목적격 관계대명사랑 유사하지요.
  
   3. This is the same watch as I lost yesterday

                             that I lost yesterday

   4. As many men as came were caught

    잡힌것 만큼 많은 사람이 왔다.(온사람은 모두 잡혔다)
   5. I will give you as much money as you need

   6. The train was late, as is often the case

     기차는 늦었습니다. 그리고 그것은 종종있는 경우입니다.
   7. I helped him, as was my duty
    여기서 as는 앞문장 전체를 받습니다. 관계대명사 which와 유사하지요.
   (나는 그를 도왔다. 그리고 그것은 나의 임무 였습니다.)

   8. He was an American, as I knew from his accent

   9.He was late for class, as is often the case with him

3. Than이 의사관계대명사로 쓰일 때
   (= than what~ , than the thing which~)

   He spends more money than he earns 
   earns의 목적어가 생략되었습니다. "버는데 뭘?" 목적어나 주어를 포함하는(선행사를 포함하는)관계대명사 what가 같은 역할을 하지요. 그래서~~ 유사관계대명사라고 하고요. than 앞에 비교급이 올때 쓰입니다.

   Children should not have more money than is needed

   Don't use more words than are necessary

4. But이 등위접속사, 부사로 쓰일 때

   He works slowly but accurately

   He is poor but honest

   He worked hard but (he) failed

   I was but a child then

   He left but an hour ago

   She is but fifteen

5. But이 전치사, 종속접속사로 쓰일 때

   All but him were drowned 
   그를 제외하고(but이 except의미:전치사-뒤에 목적어로 명사가 옮)모두다 익사했다.

   Everybody but me seems to know it 전치사

   None but a fool would do such a thing 전치사

   It is nothing but a joke (=only) 전치사

   He is anything but a teacher (=never) 전치사

   He is not such a fool but he knows it (접속사)

                         that he does not know it

   *but = that---not

6. But이 의사관계대명사로 쓰일 때

   There is no one but knows him

                    that does not know him

                   =Everybody knows him

   There is no one but loves his own country

                    that does not love his own country

                   =Everybody loves his own country

   Who is there but commits errors?

   There is no one but commits errors

                    that does not commit errors

                   =Everybody commits errors

   There is no rule but has exceptions

2 [부정문 뒤에서]
a [종종 but that로 부정의 주절 중의 so 또는 such와 상관적으로] …못할 정도로

《이 but (that) 용법은 문어적임;일반적으로는 대신에 that … not를 씀》
  
   He is not such a fool but he can tell that. 그는 그것을 모를 정도로 바보는 아니다.

《=He is not such a fool that he cannot tell that.》

b [종종 but that로 부정의 주절에 대하여 조건절을 이끌어] …않고는 (…않다)(if … not, unless)

《★ (1) 앞에서부터 옮기면 「(…하면) 반드시 …(하다)」가 됨》 (2) but절 중의 동사는 직설법
   It never rains but it pours. 《속담》 비가 오기만 하면 반드시 억수로 퍼붓는다.;화불단행(禍不單行), 엎친 데 덮친다. 

   Scarcely a day passed but I met her. 나는 그녀를 만나지 않는 날이 거의 없었다.

3a [종종 but that로 부정문 또는 의문문에 쓰인 doubt, deny, question, wonder 등의 뒤에서 명사절을 이끌어]

《문어》 …라는 것(that) 《지금은 that를 씀》
   I don’t doubt[There is no doubt] but (that) you will achieve it. 당신이 그것을 해낼 것을 의심치 않는다.
   There was no question but that heart failure had caused his death. 심장마비가 그의 죽음의 원인인 것은 의심의 여지가 없다. 《★ but에 선행하는 동사[명사]는 언제나 부정적 의미를 갖는 것에 주의》

b [종종 but that [《구어》 what]로 부정·수사의문에 쓰인 expect, fear, say, know, believe, be sure 등의 뒤에서 명사절을 이끌어] …않(는)다는 것 (that ... Not)

(It is) not that ..., but that …해서가 아니라 …이기 때문이다

:Not that I disliked the work, but that I have no time. 그 일이 싫어서가 아니라 시간이 없기 때문이다.

(It is) ten to one but ... 아마 틀림없이, 십중팔구:It is ten to one but Peter will come. 피터는 아마 틀림없이 올 것이다.
not but that[what] … 않는 것은 아니지만:I can’t come, not but that I’d like to. 나는 올 수가 없다, 오기 싫은 것은 아니지만. 《지금은 I can’t come, not that I wouldn’t like to.가 일반적임》
