Lizzie    Do you plan to go to the Netherfield ball, then, Mr. Wickham?

Wickham    Perhaps. How long has Mr. Darcy been a guest there?

Lizzie    About a month. Forgive me,
but are you acquainted with him, with Mr. Darcy?

Wickham    Indeed, I've been connected with his family since infancy.
You may well be surprised, Miss Elizabeth,
especially given our cold greeting this afternoon.

/ Given the government's record on unemployment, their chances of winning the

election look poor.

/ Given that she is interested in children, I am sure teaching is the right career for her.
(= Given her interest in children)

Lizzie     Well, I hope that your plans in favour of Meryton will not be affected
by your relations with the gentleman.

*He argued/voted in favour of the death penalty.

(In support of; approving)

/ She's sold her old car in favour of one that's smaller and more economical.

(in behalf of)

Wickham    Oh, no. It is not for me to be driven away.
If he wishes to avoid seeing me, he must go, not l.

*To drive people away means to make them want to go away or stay away.

Lizzie    I must ask, Mr. Wickham,
what is the manner of your disapproval of Mr Darcy.

*The way in which one behaves and talks

Wickham    My father managed his estate. We grew up together, Darcy and l.
His father treated me like a second son, loved me like a son.
We were both with him the day he died. With his last breath,
his father bequeathed me the rectory in his estate.
He knew I had my heart set on joining the Church.
But Darcy ignored his wishes and gave the living to another man.

*She bequeathed her fortune to him. = She bequeathed him her fortune.

*have one s heart set on = set one's heart on

/She'd set her heart on going to university.

*a position as a vicar or rector which has an income or property attached to it;

Lizzie    But why?

Wickham    Jealousy. His father... Well,
he loved me better and Darcy couldn't stand it.

*To put up with patiently or resolutely; I can't stand the heat.

Lizzie    How cruel.

Wickham    So now I'm a poor foot-soldier.
Too lowly even to be noticed.

*A soldier who fights on foot; an infantry trooper.

*a lowly shop assistant

미드로영어공부 wade through / step out / leave of absence

단어 1 “Tom, do you have any idea what I’m wading through here?”
