 예문 1) 둘 다 사용가능
When I was a child, my mother would read me a story at night before bed.
=When I was a child, my mother used to read me a story at night before bed

->Would can be used to express an action that was repeated regularly in the past.
When would is used to express this idea, it has the same meaning as used to.
(habitual past)

 예문 2) Used to만 사용가능
Euphoria used to live in Vancouver.
He used to have a Ford.
He used to be a Boy Scout.

 -> When used to expresses a situation that existed in the past, would may not be used as an alternative.
Would is used only for regularly repeated actions in the past.

 'used to R' 은 과거에 어떤 행위를 반복적(습관적)으로 했었지만 말하고 있는 시점에는 그 행위를 더 이상 하고 있지 않다는 것을 동시에 표현하는 것이다. 반면 'would R'은 과거에 반복된 행위를 표현할 뿐 이표현을 통해 현재에 그 행위가 유지되고 있는지 없는지에 대해선 알 수 없다. 즉 'would R'은 과거에 대한 단순한 회상인 반면 'used to R'은 현재와 대조된 과거이다.

'would R'은 의지를 나타내는 조동사 would의 특성상 동작을 표현할 뿐 상태를 표현할 수 없다.

ex) Apple trees used to be there. (O)
      Apple trees would be there. (X)
