지난 2007년 세상을 떠난
세계적인 이탈리아 테너가수
루치아노 파바로티 (Luciano Pavarotti)는
어렸을 때부터
성악에 천부적인 재능이 보였다.

하지만 파바로티는
고등학교를 졸업할 무렵,
진로를 결정할 수 없었다.

수학을 잘했기 때문에 수학 교사가 되고 싶었고,
성악가가 되고 싶기도 했다.
둘 다 욕심이 났다.
교사가 되는 것은 실패 확률이 별로 없는 안전한 길이었고,
성악가가 되는 것은 성공 보장이 없는 험난한 길이었다.

'성악도 하고 싶고, 학교 교사도 하고 싶은데 어떡하지?'

이 때 아버지가
고민하고 있는 파바로티의 방으로 들어왔다.
아버지는 의자를 두 개 가져다가
멀리 떼어놓았다.

"얘야, 너는 이렇게 멀리 떨어져 있는 의자에
동시에 앉을 수 있겠니?
앉기는커녕, 바닥에 떨어지게 될 것이야."

반드시 한 의자만을 선택해야 하는 상황이라는
아버지의 멋진 비유였다.

결국 파바로티는
부모에게 30세가 되어도 성악가가 되지 못하면
다른 길을 모색하겠다고 약속하고
음악의 길로 뛰어들었고,
결국 '세계 3대 테너' 로 불리는 등
수많은 인정과 사랑을 받았다.
