3장 한 문장으로 요약하기

 

‘한 문장 요약’ 문제를 풀 때에 지문을 먼저 봐서는 안 된다. 반드시 제시문(빈 칸이 있는 한 문장)을 먼저 봐야 한다. 제시문을 읽고 “ 아～이런 걸 물어보는구나… 그럼 그 쪽을 신경써서 읽어야지” 라는 마음을 가지고 지문을 접해야 한다. 만약 지문을 먼저 읽고 제시문을 보면 십중팔구 다시 지문을 읽게 되는 경우가 발생할 것이다. 지문을 완전히 이해한 상태에서도 다시 읽게 되는데 만약에 완전한 이해가 안 된 경우라면 아마 두세 번은 왔다 갔다 할 것이다. 아까운 시간, 한 문제에 다 써 버리지는 말자.

 

‘한 문장 요약’ 역시 빈 칸 채우기의 한 종류이며 기본적으로 ‘말 바꾸기’이다. 단지 ‘한 문장 요약’은 하나의 빈 칸이 아닌 두 개가 주어지므로 단순 ‘빈 칸 채우기’보다는 풀이가 더 어렵다고 할 수 있다.

 

제시문에 나와 있는 단어와 비슷한 단어(다시 말해 말 바꾸기의 대상)가 지문속에 있게 마련이다.

비슷한 단어가 나와 있는 문장이 지문에서의 핵심 문장인데, 주로 마지막 문장에 오고 있다.

수준 있는 문제이다. 우선 제시문을 보면 “(A)의 세계에서 사는 사람은 앞에 놓인 길은  밝은 환할 때 ～인 것만큼 짙은 안개 속에서 (B)하다.“ 유추를 해야 하는 문제이며 본문해석은 어렵지 않은 편이다.

 

4. 다음 글의 내용을 한 문장으로 요약하고자 한다. 빈 칸 (A)와 (B)에 가장 적절한 것끼리 짝지은 것은? (1998년 48번)

 

  When I learned how to drive, my father took me around our neighborhood to let me get a feel for the huge car we owned. The quiet, narrow streets of the neighborhood witnessed the blunders of yet another new driver : too-wide (or too-narrow) turns, sudden stops, damage to the low-hanging trees by the radio antenna, and driving on the wrong side of the street to avoid the parked cars on the right side. Through it all, my father gave words of advice and support with patience.
