Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings. 물에 관련된 표현은 물 만큼이나 흔하게 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 물이 들어간 많은 표현들은 좋지 않은 의미를 갖고 있습니다.

The expression to be in hot water is one of them. It is a very old expression. Hot water was used five hundred years ago to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing boiling water down on enemies attacking a castle.

to be in hot water(뜨거운 물 속에 있다)라는 표현이 한 예입니다. 아주 오래된 표현이죠. 5백년 전에 ‘곤경에 처하다’는 의미로 hot water라는 표현을 사용했습니다. 한 이야기에 따르면 이 표현은 성을 공격하고 있는 적군에게 뜨거운 물을 끼얹었던 관행에서 유래되었다고 합니다.

That is no longer the custom. But we still get in hot water. When we are in hot water, we are in trouble. It can be any kind of trouble--serious, and not so serious.

이와 같은 관행은 더 이상 행해지지 않습니다. 하지만 우리는 여전히 get in hot water(뜨거운 물속에 들어가다)라는 표현을 사용합니다. 뜨거운 물 속에 있다는 말의 뜻은 우리가 곤경에 처했다는 것을 뜻합니다. 이것이 심각한 곤경이든 큰 어려움이 아니든지 말입니다.

A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police. A boy can be in hot water with his mother, if he comes into the house with dirty, wet shoes.

법을 어긴 사람을 가리켜 be in hot water with the police(경찰과 뜨거운 물속에 들어갔다)라고 표현할 수도 있습니다. 한 아이가 지저분하고 젖은 신발을 신고 집에 들어왔다면 이 아이를 가리켜 be in hot water with his mother(엄마와 뜨거운 물 속에 들어가다)라는 표현을 사용할 수도 있습니다.

Being in deep water is almost the same as being in hot water. When you are in deep water, you are in difficulty. Imagine a swimmer in water over his head who cannot reach the shore.

Being in deep water(깊은 물속에 있다)라는 표현은 being in hot water(뜨거운 물속에 있다)는 표현과 거의 같은 의미를 지니고 있습니다. 우리가 깊은 물속에 있다는 것은 어려움에 처한 것을 의미하는 것입니다. 물이 머리 위까지 차올라 해안가로 헤엄쳐 갈 수 없는 상황을 상상해 보세요.

You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep for you. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks without knowing anything about the stock market.

당신이 풀 수 없는 문제에 직면했을 때 be in deep water(깊은 물속에 있다)라는 표현을 사용할 수 있습니다. 당신에게 주어진 과제가 너무 어려울 경우를 말합니다. 만약 주식 시장에 대하여 아무것도 모르는 당신이 주식투자를 했다면 당신은 be in deep water(깊은 물속에 있다)한 상태라고 표현할 수 있습니다.

To keep your head above water is a colorful expression that means staying out of debt. A company that can keep its head above water can survive economic hard times.

keep your head above water(머리를 물 위로 내놓고 있다)라는 표현은 빚을 청산한 상태를 일컫는 화려한 표현입니다. 한 기업이 keep its head above water(자신의 머리를 물 위로 내놓고 있다)한 상태라면 그 기업이 경제적으로 어려운 시기를 딛고 살아남는 것을 의미합니다.

Water over the dam is an expression about a past event. It is something that is over and done with. It cannot be changed. The expression comes from the idea that water that has fallen over a dam cannot be brought back again.

water over the dam(댐을 범람한 물)이란 표현은 지나간 사건을 의미합니다. 이미 끝난 일을 가리키는 표현입니다. 이제는 돌이킬 수 없는 일을 말할 때 사용합니다. ‘댐을 범람한 물’은 다시 되가져올 수 없다는 사실에서 이 표현이 유래되었습니다.

When a friend is troubled by a mistake he has made, you might tell him to forget about it.  You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, to hold water, is about the strength or weakness of an idea, opinion or argument. It probably comes from the way of testing the condition of a container.  If it can hold water, it is strong.

흔히 사용하는 또 다른 표현인 hold water(물을 담고 있다)라는 표현은 생각, 의견, 혹은 주장의 약점이나 강점과 관련되어 있습니다. 이것은 아마 그릇의 상태를 검사하는 방법에서 유래되었을 것입니다. 물을 담을 수 있다면 그 그릇이 튼튼하다는 것을 의미합니다.

The expression is used the same way to describe an idea or argument. If the argument can hold water, it is solid and strong without any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and cannot be proved.

어떤 생각이나 주장을 묘사할 때 이 표현을 똑같이 사용합니다. 만약 어떤 주장을 두고 hold water(물을 담고 있다)라고 표현한다면 그 주장은 아무런 허점이 없는 강하고 튼튼하다는 말입니다. 만약 그 주장이 not hold water(물을 담고 있지 않다)라고 묘사된다면 이는 그 주장에 약점이 있고 신빙성이 없다는 것을 의미합니다.

Throwing cold water also is an expression that deals with ideas or proposals. It means not to like an idea. For example, you want to buy a new computer, so you can do some of your work at home. But your wife throws cold water on the idea, because a computer costs too much.

throw cold water(찬 물을 끼얹다)라는 표현 또한 생각이나 제안과 관련되어 있습니다. 이것은 어떤 생각을 좋아하지 않는다는 의미입니다. 예를 들어 당신이 새 컴퓨터를 구입해 집에서 일을 하기를 원한다고 가정해 보겠습니다. 하지만 당신의 부인이 그 생각에 throw cold water(찬물을 끼얹다) 할 수가 있습니다. 컴퓨터는 너무 비싸기 때문이지요.
